lduncan
Just got a new fish today. Something a bit different. Ring Tail Tang - Acanthurus blochii Seems to behave much like a powder blue at the moment - a little skittish. No doubt it will settle down. JoeBlog
Sweet fish Layton! What a nice new addition. Is that the actual one that you picked up or did you down load a representative pic? I guess with the plans for the new BIGGER tank in the works you aren't so worried about reducing the boi-load any more. Aren't these one of the large Tangs? Brianemone
that is a nice fish
lduncan
No the one picture is not the actual one I got. The one I have is morphing between the juvenile shape to the adult shape and colour at the moment. Haven't been able to get a photo, cause like I said, it's a bit skittish at the moment like powder blues are when you first add them, the slightest movement outside the tank and they dive for cover. As far as size goes, they grow to about the same size as a sohal. Up to 40cm in the wild. Luck the new tank is comming. Layton
Pies
Is it fighting with the Sohal? Nice fish. Whats this about a new tank? When? How big? Plans? Photos? Pie
lduncan
No fighting, all my tangs are happy campers. Yes I am planning a new tank, looking to be 1900 x 1100 x 700 high. Just in the initial planning at the moment, I just finished exams on wed. finally, so i'll start to finalise some stuff like the tank size soon. Brianemone
wow thats a wide tank. that would be fun to aquascape, makes me think of that steve guys tanks in oregon (west??) how wide was your new one pie??
lduncan
Would have liked it wider, but there isn't enough room... unless I knock some more walls out. 6' x 6' would have been nice, but just too big to squeeze in. And with the price of glass at the moment, would be very expensive, especially with one side diamant. The tank will be modelled on Steve Weast's (http://www.oregonreef.com). Kermit
Nice fish dude, is that one of redwoods lastest releases? Hmmm Tank, nice size dude. Yeah glass costs.
Pies
So did you buy a house in the end? Is it in wall or free standing? Good healthy size for sure. Its funny that now my new tank is in, it really doesn't look that big at all, even though its twice the size of my last tank. Knock out the wall and go bigger Pie
lduncan
Local pet shops going to love you Layton ;^) Why? Not planning on adding much more stock. Just more room for my acros to grow. Would like to get some 1 foot plus colonies growing. I'll need more rock though. Pies, i had that same feeling when I got my 6' into place. Seemed big when I ordered it. Not so big once you put it in place. I got the house in the end. The tank will defiantly be inwall. Kermit: Yeah this is one from Redwoods latest Hawain shipment. Not a massive shipment, but lots of tangs, of all sorts. Missed out on the Archilles though... thanks Steve . They just got their coral shipment in, after months waiting for CITIES. Kermit
I'd say there'l be a huige que at rewood when there corals are released, i think i'll be setting up my tent, when word or release comes. Man i've got to get my new tank asap i'm missing out on so much, so many nice fishes.
lduncan
It's a shame they don't bring in most of the corals i'm after though. Oh well, their loss I suppose, can't say I haven't asked. Layton
Kermit
It's mainly hard corals isn't it? Bubbles, brains? Is there any acro's? Maybe next time dude, as they ordered this shipment months ago.
JoeBlog
I've been asking more regularly as well. Not only from them, but also from Organisms. I figure that if I become a real pain in the ass that they will order some in just to shut me up! From what I've heard/read, Alois has the huge shipment and hopefully something will trickle down south to us ChCh guys. Bob/Craig has asked me to let them know exactly what I want, so hopefully there will be a little something special for me in their next order. Doc Holiday
Bob/Craig has asked me to let them know exactly what I want, so hopefully there will be a little something special for me in their next order. I wouldn't hold your breath, They say the same to everyone.
lduncan
Must be almost a year and a half two years waiting for me. They bring in other stuff I ask for, just not acros and the like. Organism are planning on upgrading their lighting on some of their tanks, so that they can get acro's from up north, for us poor chch guys. Craig said that there were acros in this shipment, but he was just winding me up 'cause i'm always asking for them. Layton
JoeBlog
I wouldn't hold your breath, They say the same to everyone. I've never asked them for a specific coral, so that is yet to be seen. However, they have always gotten any fish that I've specifically requested (given that it isn't a rediculous request for something half way around the world) and pretty certain that it will be the same outcome where corals are concerned. A year and half is a long time to go on asking without getting what you want. Sorry to hear that Layton. That must be incredibly frustrating. However, I think during that time, you might have been one of the only reefers in ChCh interested in those types corals though.(?) Now there are at least 4-5 Reefers that I know of (and I would certainly guess that there are more) looking for at least some SPS for their tanks. This might be enough to motivate people/suppliers to start getting these types of corals in. I've heard the same about Organisms upgrading their system, and that is great news. Interestingly, I don't even think at this stage with the availability of these types of corals coming down to ChCh that these new lights are even necessary. From what I can gather, it isn't the lack of appropriate facilities holding up the availability of SPS here, but rather simply the lack of supply. reef
There certainly is not a lack of supply of SPS coral, most shops don’t keep them as they are a risk item. Light is very important for these corals so an upgrade to metal halide or t5 should make a big difference. As hobbyist get more experience and start spending money on quality filtration I envisage that SPS coral will become very popular as it is overseas. jetskisteve
Hey Layton Isnt your tank getting fairly stocked with Acro's tho, looks great in those pics.
lduncan
Thanks Steve, it is almost fully stocked. That's why I need a bigger tank. More room for them to grow. Layton
