reef13
I have noticed in my malawi tank that some of my fish mainly my demasoni have started to get some blackish spots and a slight darkness around the mouth and chin almost looks dirty.I noticed it today on 1 of my yellows too so thought i better find out whats happening the fish seem happy and fine otherwise and are eating well. I change some of the water very 2 weeks and every other test i have has come up normal as well. Anyone know what this is or is it nothing? MarkLB
This may not be your problem but I've had dark spots appear on my Red Zebras in the past and it was due to a high spirulina content in the food I was using. It went away fairly soon after I changed foods.

reef13
I did read about that but don't think it could be that as i don't feed them much of that if any. almost looks like they have a shadowy beard

si_sphinx
I've noticed mine did got these marks for a while when i had some and yellows seem to do it every now and then except its usually a brown stripe down the side. they also get quite dark around the face. it usually happened when i had done a tank decor change or moved them to a diff tank or feed them on something diff from what they were normally feed. if i feed them on mainly flakes they would get these marks but when i started to offer them diff foods the marks were gone. so i think i would agree on everyone elses comments in saying it depends on what you feed them
smidey
i have also had red zebs get dark spots when i changed to a spirulina based food. recently i had a e yellow go very dark, the same darkish colouring that i have seen people on here confirm as a bad quality fish. she is the offspring of my yellows which are top quality, I put her in a tank by herself & instantly she became the best coloured yellow i have seen. i think it may be due to stress or something, i don't really know what but the moment she was in a tank alone all was normal. maybe yours are not so happy with the conditions, maybe a rearrange of the tank or something might settle them down also

If so I have noticed the same thing in my fish so can only assume it is diet based apart from that there has been no ill effects in my fish so I wouldn't stress too much.. The black marking is often attributed to spirulina based foods but even when I stopped feeding them for a long period I still had them there so I am unsure what causes it, it may be as smidey has suggested and be environment or stress related but that would be fairly obvious stress type barring or lack of colour I would think.
