alanmin4304
What formulae do people use for breeding wax moth larvae? The formulae I have been using dries out and is not working for me so I am looking for something that works.
livingart
4 oz. glycerin 1/4 cup sugar 1/4 cup hot water 1 box (8 oz.) baby cereal (oat) Dissolve the glycerin and sugar in hot water. Cool the solution. Pour the whole box of cereal into a large bowl. Pour the solution in a very thin stream into the cereal while stirring enthusiastically—it should take about 2 minutes to dribble all of the liquid if you are pouring slowly enough. The medium will be somewhere between sticky, lumpy, and crumbly, and it will smell very pleasant. Store it in a plastic bag. I also add 2 tablespoons or so of brewers ( NOT active yeast) yeast, it seems to stop mould from attacking the culture. Also keep between 25-30C. also u can use honey rather than the sugar..better but more expensive. http://lawrencehallofscience.org/foss/f ... moths.html
alanmin4304
That is the formula I have been using and keeping it at 30 deg C but it is drying out. Moths hatch and then die off and nothing after that. Only difference is I used ground up porridge instead of baby food (oats) because I figured thats what it was---could be wrong. livingart
Mix 2 cups bran and 2 cups wholemeal flour with 5 tablespoons honey and glycerin until mixture is moist but not wet. Then add one teaspoon yeast.
Navarre
Hi Alan, what happens if you make a wetter mixture? The oats and suger shoudl hold more fluid than half a cup so you can slick it down a bit maybe?
