Tyrannosaurus
I moved things in my cichlid tank about yesterday and added a bunch of limestone. Today I did a water change of around 40% (I took a bunch of plastic plants out last night and there must have been a lot of nitrifying bacteria on them because the water parameters which had been okay, went screwy today, and when I say went screwy, I mean they were a tad over 0 in both Ammonia and Nitrites.) Now, about an hour after the water change, the cichlids have horrified looks on their faces (if that's possible) and are swimming in short, stop start jerky motions and fanning the fins next to their gills alot. The RTS I have in there seems unaffected. What should I do? And what is the problem? Could it be some kind of pH shock? I tested the pH and its pretty much stable, so I don't see how it could be that. I did add dechlorinator to the water as well.
ryanjury
I doubt the plants had any bacteria on them I regularly move fish into a fresh tank with just an established filter and have never had problems.. Are the fish gasping at all? Swimming in short erratic movements and fanning the fins alot sounds like something they would do when stressed or scared maybe the change around in tank and water change has unsettled them? livingart
maybe limestone particles in the water and affecting their gill?
Tyrannosaurus
Hm, they've calmed down now. I suppose it's possible they just got spooked, though my JD keeps wedging itself under rocks and playing dead.
