Flourescent tubes

I need to replace the T8 (they're the big ones right?) tubes in my 4ft light (just one of those Aquaone black ones that sit on the glass). I was just going to buy them from Hutt Pets where they are about $40ish but I am wondering if they are any cheaper at hardware or lighting shops or if you can even get those kinds of bulbs from places other than pet stores? Or are they special aquarium ones? I really don't want that yellowy light some of them have, I want the really crisp whitey blue old lady's hair colour.

The first number actually indicates the color rendition index of the tube, not the size/type of the tube. 8 is a standard tube. Photographers etc would want lights with higher CRI but the standard light is fine for fishtanks.

The best way to confirm the length and type of tube you have is make a note of the wattage which should be printed on the tube. Every one is different for example a 4 foot T8 is 36w, a 4 foot T5 is 54w, electrical wholesalers will know from the wattage what size and type of tube you need. "The light bulb man" on Boulcott St used to carry a good range of tubes including specific aquarium tubes, I haven't been there for a while but assume he still does.

T12s are the big ones, T8s are the middle size ones, T5s are the little ones.:P

You're not likely to find t12s though. I have a couple in the spider shed off my carport, but I think they've been there since the 1970s...
