Swimming in Loops

I've noticed that both my young Jack Dempsey and one of my betta males (in different tanks) both like to sometimes swim in loops. The JD just does big loops around the glass, going up, over and round to the bottom where he almost flips completely over, and the betta does the same sort of thing around the suction cup for the heater sometimes. They show no signs of illness and the water is fine, so I don't think it is sickness.

Is this a type of happy fish play?

I was wondering about that. The tank is a bit bare right now because I took out all but two log things. I had a few grass matt plastic plant things in there, but they were catching a lot of debris and making the water quality hard to maintain. I think I'll try and get some rocks or wood for him to swim around.

My SAE does the same thing from time to time, as does my tiger barb.

I dont know how they could get bored, its a pretty choka tank full of hidey holes and even put a powerhead in there for more water circ etc.

Hes doing it right now in fact. If only he cleaned up algae. *sigh*
