mattwa
Hi all, Our hiding discus are out and about alot more at the moment . Our 2 Red Snakeskins are hanging around the corner of the tank by the heater and chase any other dicus that comes near them away, they do go back and join the rest of their family when they aren't hanging out alone or if they are frightened back behind the driftwood. They are about 10 months old. Could this mean they may be pairing up?
Flosty
It is quite possible, this generally is pairing behaviour. Watch to see if they start shaking at each other, the female usually starts the courtship
mattwa
Hi again, We have just noticed there are pinky coloured eggs on the heater in the tank. :bounce: How do we know if they are male and female or 2 females? Will the eggs make it if they are on the heater? Thanks
Morcs
Id turn your heater down as much as you think your discus are comfortable with. Eggs generally benefit from higher temps, but on the heater itself is a fair bit higher. Get hold of a breeding cone or piece of slate or something to spawn on, if its their first spawn, if it fails, they should spawn again within about 3 weeks and hopefully you wouldve given them a better spawning site by then
SamH
If possible, turn off the heater with eggs on it after adding a new heater. This should save the eggs. Congrats and good luck! :bounce:

Flosty
You need to see the spawning to know what are male/female You could do as Sam said and change the heater If you are doing regular water changes they will spawn again next week Congrats though I hope you have got yourself a pair :bounce:
mattwa
We have put an extra heater in and turned the temperature down on the heater the eggs are on. We do water changes every other day but will start doing them every day now that we have eggs. Thanks for all the suggestions everyone and please keep them coming. SamH
I told him to say that  Always trying to steal my thunder! I actually came up with that one all by myself, no help from some sneaky over-filter, clear water, topped up tank freak. 8)

mattwa
We were too late with the heater... They were all cooked and then eaten, so will have to wait for the next attempt to find out if they're a true pair. Got a terracotta cone today, so hopefully they'll use that next time. Only another couple of weeks hopefully
SamH
Mmm... Were the eggs scrambled or fried? Sorry about your loss though, better luck next time. Maybe have a spare heater handy?
