smidey
none of my 3 have any spots but having them is common. i have found that a square tipped anal fin is consistant with male & rounded tip female. of course this is no gaurantee but i have found it to be correct in all cases so far. spoon
i cant say from experience but when you see them breeding you will know there is always the cross- dresser in the fish world same goes for a lot of types of fish
smidey
i cant say from experience but when you see them breeding you will know there is always the cross- dresser in the fish world same goes for a lot of types of fish i have 8 female red empresses & they "dance" trying to spawn so that doesn't mean you have a pair. the only true way to tell with fish that females colour the same as males is by venting or having fertile eggs. si_sphinx
none of my females have egg spots, and out of all my males only one has them. Also both males and females have black on their anal fins  i can only tell the difference in some of them when they are holding. ryanjury
Male and female electric yellows can both have egg spots, I have seen fish I would have sworn were males with jet black fins nice vivid egg spots but they were holding.. As with all mbuna egg spots are only one of the considerations when sexing them.
livingart
i use the sure test when sexing them if they are holding they are females for sure
Nymox
My corys have been doing spawning behavior since day 1, though Ive never seen a single egg. Perhaps they just like to role play or something.
trace&steve
hmm ok well both my big male have no egg spots but my littler one does,,, i brought a breeding group yesterday of 4 yellows the 2 biggest ones didnt have egg spots but were hardout fighting with my 2 big boys so figured they must be male and the second to smallest which is about 7cm has a tiny egg spot and to my suprise she had 7 fry in her mouth :bounce: yippee finally a female!!!!!!! so females can have egg spots,,,, strange that when my big bright males dont but the female does........ MarkLB
I remember getting a visit from another fishkeeper last year. They looked at my Red Zebras and told me I'd never get any fry because all my fish had egg spots and therefore all were male. FAIL. I've since had countless fry from them 8)
smidey
what do you guys think of the anal fin shape theory? it is 100% correct with my fish except i cannot know if it works for the tropheus as i have not vented them yet. MarkLB
I use fin shape, dorsal and anal, as an early tell too, especially with Peacocks.
