Zebra Loach's Bid For Freedom

I added 3 new Zebra loaches to my tank last night.

This morning just before I left for work, I thought that I would check to see all was fine in the tank. To my surprise I found one of my old loaches stuck in the outlet pipe! I quickly turned the filter off, hoping that he would just flow out with the water.. but no, he kinda looked stuck! So I then take off the end cover of the filter unit and again to my surprise :o I discover another loach lying on the black filter wool! He had somehow made it up the outlet pipe and flipped his way over the divider bit in the filter and onto the filter wool just below the spray bar! I was unsure if he was still alive, who knows how long he had been there. Anyway I tentatively picked him up by the tail and he flipped around so a sure sign he was still alive, I managed to get him to the hole for the outlet pipe before he slipped his way out of my fingers and went down the pipe back into the tank.

Never have I had any of my fish try and escape from my tank! I hope they don't try it again while I'm at work :o

i am glad all is well, i "do the rounds" every morning when i feed them & make sure everything is ok. it has saved big losses a couple of times now so it's worth the effort. I discovered once that i forgot to turn on the airation from the night before so if i had of gone to work i would have come home to a tank of expensive cat food.

That was lucky Sharkie.

I suppose my fish would be ok hanging out on top of the filter wool for a while. The water is running through it so the fish would be kept moist. I was reading on here a few weeks ago about how some fish can survive out of water, as long they stay wet. That eases my mind... sort of. They must have been pretty stressed out to do something like that though.

when I was renovating my tank one of my dwarf laoches was hiding in a crevice of one of my driftwood pieces and i hadn't noticed, took driftwood out and had it out for about 10mins while I cleaned and replanted plants then looked and saw my loach staring at me on the table..I freaked out but it seemed fine after I returned it to the tank

Ug, I had a similar thing happen. I pulled this big log up out of the tank and I held it above the water for a minute or so to let it drip and let anyone jump off. Then I proceeded to walk to the bench but along the way I heard this big *SPLAT* on the tiles and there was one of the striata loaches flopping on the floor! I was so afraid he might get brain damage from the long drop! He's just fine though.
