stephikins
I have had this on both my tanks over the last 4-6 months. It's almost like oil but the fish seem to be doing fine. I have increased aeration on top with airstones etc but it's still there. Any ideas?
N1CK
What type of fish food are you using(flake/pellets) I seem to get this problem every now and then with the nutrafin flakes it's not attractive but i don't think it hurts also how big are the tanks?? Chantal
My tank has that too... Fish are healthy as can be, up until hubby overfed the fish and 2 died my angels were laying eggs like there was no tomorrow. My tank is 160L. Would be very interested in what it is though
phoenix44
it is more likely than not a protein film. try mopping up as much as you can with a paper towel, and to get rid of it increase the surface agitation.
stephikins
The tanks are both 200litre with mainly angels in them. Have been feeding nutrifin flakes so might switch for a few days and see what happens.
David R
try mopping up as much as you can with a paper towel You're better off just skimming the surface using an icecream container, I've found thats the best way to get rid of it from my sumps. si_sphinx
Ive always found that every now and then this hapens to my tanks as well. To fix it i just increase the surface water agitation by using a small power head with the water outlet out of the water. Works great and fish are fine. Romeo
Seems to be a sign that my filter media needs cleaning, because in the past when it's built up I've wrung out the filter media and it's slowly gone away again. May not be the best idea if you've got a heavily stocked tank though.
stephikins
Thanks for all the ideas. I did water testing today and all is as it should be. Also I cleaned the filter media last weekend but it was there before that anyway. It seems fine for now and the fish are happy so I'm not going to worry too much. stephikins
Can snails form bubbles like foam on the tank surface. I have closed down one of my tanks and have begun to clean out all the ornaments etc only to find a few snails making their appearance. Morcs
In a well stocked tank its quite important to get rid of it - the film hinders with oxygen exchange on the surface. I have two filters creating a good surface current, but I still get the film on the surfaces areas that are slow moving - but it stays maintained at an ok level. make sure you have some surface movement,
