suphew
You need to build and overflow box, do a search and you will find plenty of information. More importantly than stopping fish going for a hydro slide, the overflow box takes water from the surface which is were the proteins tend to end up. suphew
Actually just realised this isn't the saltwater forum, the surface skimming isn't as important for a fresh water tank, but an overflow box is still the way to go.
Bilbo
Right Serphew it isnt SW section but your idea is the best one anyway. The salties have some great ideas that move across to fresh water. Like the overflow comb, which should solve the problem. A 4cm pipe is huge, your flow rate must be quite high. Ira
A 4cm pipe is huge, your flow rate must be quite high. Yeah, I had a 20mm, iirc, pipe in my marine that was the overflow for a 6000lph pump.
suphew
My overflow bulkhead is 40mm, my stand pipe is 50mm. I little bigger than I need, but I'd rather it was too big than too small.

Ira
is there any way to cover this? like with 1 of thoes metal things that the pet shops use? Find something meshy, cut it up, silicone, epoxy, super glue it on. Just about anything will work.
jolliolli
I bought an endcap for the overflow pipe from bunnings. The endcap has a large hole in the centre and I glued gutter guard to the inside of it to stop any fish getting sucked down the pipe (in the event they travelled over the overflow). suphew
If you setup an overflow box you wont need to cover it. But if you did decide you needed to there are a few vent things that plumbing shops sell that will do the trick or as Jolliolli suggested an end cap with holes drilled. Whatever you do use, make sure the holes aren't too fine or you will risk algae etc blocking them.
