SamH
I've just ordered some sheets of 2mm acrylic for fish tank lids and decided to get some for dividers too. I order three pieces to fit in my 45x25x25 (28L) tank. I'm thinking of dividing the tank into 3 or 4 equal partions and drilling holes in the acrylic for water flow. It'd be better if it was removeable but permanent is okay too. How could/should I attach these and how many partions should I have? Should I use suction cups? If so, where can I get them? Thanks. HaNs
$2 shop 3 or 4 equal partions = 2-3 dividers
SamH
Thanks HaNs. I was wondering if 7 Litres of space (3 dividers, 4 spaces) was enough for a Betta or if 9.3 Litres (2 dividers, 3 spaces) would be better?

SamH
How could I attach the suction cups to the acrylic though?
VinsonMassif
Drill a small hole and poke the end thru, using some kind of stopper or hook that maybe came with the cups.
suphew
If you get the sheet slightly bigger than the width of the tank our can bend them to jam them in place. If there is no water in the tank you could also silicon them in place, it wont hold well, but because the pressure will be equal on each side they would stay ion place. Another option is to get some glass strips cut and silicon these on each side of where you want the partitions, this would mean you could slide the partitions in and out. Guest
I'll start a thread and post some pics of my divided fighter tank in the Anabantoid section. It might give you some ideas on how you can make yours.
SamH
I also read on the UB forums that someone used magnets sort of like an Algae-Cleaner to attach the dividers to the glass. Can this actually be done? If so, where can I get magnets and are they aquarium safe?
SamH
Also, where can I get aquarium safe sponges apart from LFS and LPS? Thanks heaps
phoenix44
sponges? try spotlight. they also have massive roles of filter wool.
VinsonMassif
You can get plastic slots that stick to the glass with suction cups for a few dollars. Just ask at your LFS. It is really simple.
imsweet
I siliconed airline that had been split, then just cut my plastic divider to fit, slotted them in place and filled with water. Can easily be removed to make larger spaces or put back in place.
SamH
Here's some pics: (Don't you dare say it looks good, because it doesn't and isn't supposed to, yet  ) -Started off by running a small bead of silicone along the edges of the cut up real estate board then stuck them onto the back glass. This covers the mirror on the back (to reduce flaring) and hopefully the acrylic, which is yet to arrvie, will slot into the gaps. -Cut the plastic spines to fit and run a line of silicone up next to them. Pushed them down onto the line and smoothed out the silicone that came out the sides. -Done! Now all I need to do is wait fro the acrylic to arrive and cut it to fit. SamH
I know I'm rather proud of my silicone work on the front. It looks tidy but I don't know how the back is going to look underwater :-?
imsweet
Least you have clear silicone... i've got white :-?
SamH
Clear? Yeah, the stuff I put on was clear. Used a meth blue treatment the other day, now it's blue Here's the tanks in its final resting place. Fingers crossed for acrylic arriving tomorrow. What substrate should I use? No artificial, light coloured sand or pea gravel. Hoping to do a peat layer under it, what's the best peat to use for this?
SamH
Man I wish I'd done this 7 days ago, then I wouldn't have to wait 7 days for the silicone to cure :-?
k1w1y2k
You can buy dividers with suction cups from most pet shops.
SamH
Thanks but no thanks. DIY all the way!
SamH
Acrylic came today, broke a few peices but when I took my time I got it right. Bought a new fighter and slotted in the tank, now I need to decide between gravel or sand and how I'm going to filter it.
SamH
First one is front on Second is on an angle Third is in relation to the tank next to it Can't wait to fill it up
SamH
When do you think it's safe to put fish in? I won a fighter on TradeMe but should I wait till Saturday to go get him? Thanks
SamH
Water has been "cloudy" for the last couple of days. Nothing serious but I thought that if you added water carefully, the substrate wouldn't get stirred up and make the water go cloudy. Can I add fish if it's still cloudy by Saturday?
