Recommended Posts

Have changed my tank from an African tank to a discus tank now.

Snapped a few shots of the discus at the LFS and was just after an opinion on the quality.

Just wondering if you could put a name to them as well,is hard to pick from the web page I have found to get a definate on some of them.

This one is my favourite in there atm, wouldn't come out for the camera.

Bigger one in centre.

Hi there, the one in the middle of the first pic looks to be a red turk

and does look to be the pick of the bunch.

They all seem healthy, especially for LFS discus

although IMO they look to be a little stunted and may not grow much more

I see you live in Aus, if I was you I would try and source my fish through these guys in these posts

You would do better here IMO

Combination of Foods, Water Quality etc...

Discus need regular Water Changes I do 3 x 70% Water Changes on my Discus Tank a Week.

Discus can release a Hormone that stunts the other Fish, all to do with being the Biggest and Strongest of the Bunch I guess, hence the several Water Changes per Week.

I imagine you can get your fish to come good if you keep the good food and water changes going.

I don't suppose the LFS will do the 3 water changes a week, where a breeder will?

The LFS has more discus coming in Friday will be checking them to see how they look coming straight from his breeder. They may be a little better.

Hope to have a few early nexy week.

Will contact the breeder Flosty has mentioned too.

I thought that some of the fish in the pics looked a bit stunted, that is why I was asking the questions.

Honest opinions are what I am after.

Thanks

Is too small a tank all that causes them to stunt or are there other causes as well, food, water quality?

Stunting can occur from all manner of things including small tank, poor water condition, overcrowding, poor diet and bullying.

Alot of discus owners do daily water changes to keep the water in tip top shape

I imagine you can get your fish to come good if you keep the good food and water changes going.

They will stay healthy for sure but if they have done there growing already they won't grow anymore or very little

highly unlikely for sure

check them out and see what they look like, check the eye size, it should not be too big in proportion to the body

Will contact the breeder Flosty has mentioned too.

I would for sure, , it will mean shipping but you would come out better off in the long run with quality fish.

not all look stunted, the turk and the snow white look allright but it could just be the angle of the photo.
