Dave+Amy
maybe people release pets they don't have time for anymore in there?
markvs
I saw turtles there a number of years ago, but dont know if they are breeding there?
twinkles
i used to go there most days to feed the eels, and watch the rabbits in the early morning, never saw any turtles so i'd guess people might have dumped the odd one, and someone else has grabbed them for a free pet. Most of the rabbits there are dumped pets, they cull them off every few months but people still do it. Why would they need to cull the eels? They've always been there, the maori name for the place means water of eels. The koi were added a few years back to get rid of the oxygen weed, excess bread etc, that was fouling the pond. I thought it was a great example of natural selection the way they added orange adults only, and a few years later nearly all the koi are grey, and all the young ones. diver21
its a lake in auckland next to the zoo.
twinkles
natural spring, used to be aucklands water supply. flows through the zoo, through a bush area, and out into the sea.
markvs
The rumor was that the red ears are, in fact escapees from the Zoo, washed out during floods many years ago, and not retrieved.
Stella
I thought koi were a noxious pest! Quite illegal to be moving them around. Nice seeing so many eels. The longfin eel is under pretty serious threat of extinction right now, and the shortfin is following close behind. Of the eels that remain, most of them are male as the big females get fished out preferentially and they only breed once, right before they die. twinkles
yep they would have needed i permit for the koi but its a spring which comes out of the ground, and goes into the sea less than 1km away, so there's not really anywhere they could go. still lots of people must have pinched them for their ponds. There's some lovely big koi in the zoo there too, worth a look
Stella
lots of people must have pinched them for their ponds. exactly! We really don't want these things around the country, they mess up natural habitats for the animals that are supposed to be there. Stella
(oh and apart from the fact that it is quite illegal to possess them)
