petermc
Hey all. I bought this tank with the intention of eventually keeping discus but the more i have looked into all my options i have decided to go down the community tank road.My tank is 1000mm long,650mm front to back and 700mm high. I have just finished cycling it with 5 colombian tetras which are all a good size(1 inch) and they all seem very happy and active. I have a few ideas at this stage but would love input as to what has worked for everyone. I would like to increase the amound of colombian tetras to about 10 in total and a small school of conga tetra(say about 10 also) Fishi would like to include... Tri colour shark. Angel fish (4-6) buy all young Small group of clown loaches and a pleco down bottom. I would really like a feature fish of some sort but unsure what the story is with how the angels will be. Input and ideas? Thanks Pete
lmsmith
Loaches really need to be in a big tank in big (>5) groups. Angels would be ok, depending on their individual temperaments. You're best to get 6 - 8 angels, they tend to be less aggressive in groups.
smidey
that tank is quite tall so something along the lines of angels, gaurami or your original idea of discus would work as they will fill the "space at the top" you will have if you don't get them. then you could add the middle & bottom dwellers to complete the equation. I had 4 angels in a 1000mm tank & when they became adults it was no where near big enough as they faught so much. they were fine until it came time to breed so you can have a few until then & there isn't usually any probems selling adult angels if thats the way you go. petermc
So 3 would be a safe number to go with then if i was planning on keeping them long term? Kind of a catch 22 isnt it...more peaceful in a group and yet i dont have the space for a group.haha. The only other fish that will be haring that mid-upper water will be colimbian tetra,6 congo tetra and a golden shark.. Hope these arnt silly questions i just like doing things right first time. smidey
i would get a few & thin them out when they are bigger that way you can choose which ones to keep.
Dave+Amy
get a larger number of Angels then you can refine your group as they age and fight...plus they look awesome in a group - I'm currently senting up a Blushing Angels feature tank
Sharkie
i would go with a herd of elephant noses around 6 and a nice school of yellow tail congo tetras and some gymnogeophagus balzanis and red humps and for good mesure some khuli loaches and cory's along the bottom oh and some pleco's of the smaller size.....there i think that should about do it. newfisher
Have you been to http://www.tropicalfishandaquariums.com/ they have a really helpful compatability database. I've just set up a tank with 10 x Angels and Clowns. As the Angels grow I will have to on sell them, same with the Clowns however the tank looks awesome very active. Aquatopia
With a tank that size there is nothing to stop you keeping clowns, especially at the size you will buy them at and they are medium speed growing so odds are you will have a bigger tank by the time they need a bit more space. I had a standard 3' community aquarium with 8 clown loach in it in addition to a shoal of about 15 emperor tetra, 6 corydoras adolfoi, 3 golden gourami, 8 marbled hatchets, and a mixture of other barbs and tetras - probably close to 80 fish all up. It was running with two fluval 403's at the time with plenty of aeration and water changes - water quality and parameters were always pristine and never had any losses. Its a lot about choosing compatible fish and doing proper maintenance when you run a community tank - the emphasis on the word "community". Good luck, and I hope we get to see some pics when its at a stage you are happy with. Incidentally, its a tall tank ! You could opt to have the water level lower, say at 400 and have plants that grow up and out of the water, or do it along the lines of a swamp/mangrove biotope and put things like archer fish in there as a feature (assuming you can get them here) - have a proper lid or at least covered with mesh and you can put flies in there etc, which the fish will shoot jets of water at to catch them for food - way cool IMHO hehe. Saw a tank like that when I was trawling for ideas to renovate my tank, it looked really cool and the person had a pet snake in the branches and Swordtails in the there

REEVESTA
I think some siamese algae eaters would look cool in a group of 3 or 4 in that tank. I have 2 big ones about 13cm and their really cool to watch
Dave+Amy
The pet snake puts a totally different edge to it - lol ! Something like this perhaps ? it was an intense albino snake among red flowers and heavy branches - think the tank was form the States...completely jealous! Maybe one day when I'm rich....lol Petermc - so what did you decide in the end? What fish did you get? Update and pics?

Dave+Amy
does that sand change the pH at all? Thinking about sand for my Angel tank but worried about the chemistry of it all...and how does that sand hold your plants down? haha I'm guessing Peter built that tank for you my Angel tank is similar but taller
