Stu :)
I'm in the process of reorganizing my breeding tanks (one lives next to the drill press and lathe ) and was thinking of rather have them scattered around the garage, maybe put them all onto one convenient shelving unit. I've looked at the metal shelves one can buy at Mitre10, Bunnings and Super Cheap Auto; to be fair I'm not very convinced by the units, and the pricey'er ones look alright but the cost seems at tad crippling compared to DIY with timber. I was wondering what sized timber does everyone else use for breeding tank stands? I've seen a number of other fish breeders stands online and the wood varies from 'stupidly' thin to 2x2 and 2x3. At this point I want to mount six tanks- two 60 litres and four 50 litres in a three high by two wide configuration with spaces for fry rearing boxes. Many thanks, Stu
Ira
I'd be inclined to use 2X4s since pretty much a universal size.
whetu
I reckon the way it's designed and joined together is way more important than the actual timber size (within reason). Lots of solid verticals and plenty of well-placed diagonals are the key. And screws! Lots of screws! And glue! Lovely lovely glue! :bounce: ummm... I rather enjoy building stuff with wood.

Lovely lovely glue! :bounce: That's what I was thinking, all the small tank breeding setups I saw never used (from what I could tell) bigger than 2x2. Although I did see a nice strong metal stand at Bunnings on sale... ummm... I rather enjoy building stuff with wood. Ditto... but I prefer balsa and bass wood ...and sometimes I mix a bit of plastic in as well... ...sorry getting off topic here  Stu
k1w1y2k
I made mine using 2x4 LVL (Laminate Veneer Lumber) it has the versility of wood, and is stronger than steel.
