shadowfax
just letting everyone one know there is an outbreak of rcd in Taranaki so if you can get your rabbits vaccinated, stay away from breeders & people with rabbits to help minimise losses. also dont buy any animals from the area & have them pet couriered as it will only help spread the virus. Caryl
Oh, I thought there had been a recall of some residual current devices  Isn't that disease around usually anyway so all pet rabbits should be vaccinated whether there is an outbreak or not? shadowfax
lol, yes they should be but not alot of people bother. i provide a handout with my rabbits that provides alittle bit of information about rcd but ive still had people say they have never heard of it when they get in touch to let me know how their rabbit is doing  hopefully it wont spread from that area. Caryl
I hope you don't mind if I go slightly off topic here shadowfax but your RCD and the difference between what you meant and what I thought it was reminds me of the firm that does the security at our local wine festival. They are called BSE Security (or Services) and my friend, a doctor, calls them the mad cow guys as he thinks 'Bovine spongiform encephalopathy' when he sees BSE  He does not call them this while they are within hearing mind you as they are all very large Pacific Island lads and although he himself is 6ft 3, he is not as well muscled as them 8)
yeh_buddy
Thanks for the warning Shadowfax. Even though Im not in the Taranaki region, I love my bunny too much to take any chances, getting him vaccinated was the first thing I organised when I got him. And just like a puppy maintaining his yearly booster shoots is important. I hope other rabbit owners will read this topic and get their bunnies vaccinated if they haven't already. It's horrible to think of someone loosing their furry friend to RCD because they didn't vaccinate them.

LYNDYLOO
Have lost 5 of my precious Bunnys to Calicivirus about a month ago Only have dad left now so will be no more Bunnys for me I was told if they are vaccinated, and they have contact with wild rabbits, the chance of my rabbbits getting calicivirus was still very high. We live on a 1 1/2 acre lifestyle block with a few wild rabbits running around, so I'm thinking this is where my bunnys have picked up this deadly virus. I'm not allowed any contact with rabbits for the next 110 days I'm told. Please Please everybody vaccinate your Pet Rabbit, I would hate for your rabbit to go through what mine went through if they contract this Virus. Had an autopsy done on the last Rabbit I lost, which was the female of my breeding pair, Liver showed signs of Calicivirus, Autopsy cost $300 but I HAD to know what killed them, so I'm pleased I now have an answer to why i lost 5 rabbits in a matter of 24 hours. I would strongly advise anyone who has a rabbit or is thinking of getting a rabbit, DO NOT GET ONE if you live out in the country or anywhere else where there is the chance of your rabbit having contact with a wild rabbit. There is a very high chance that your Rabbit will contract the calicivirus. Lyndyloo
shadowfax
i live in the country & have wild rabbits running around the paddocks next door & on our front lawn. your are at no more risk living in the country than in town. most of the bad cases of rcd that ive heard about are from people that live in town. yeh_buddy
Oh wow Lyndyloo your in Levin, same as me. What part of Levin? Im on Queen Street. My rabbit is a house rabbit and he goes outside when the whether is good. I dont know if I am right in thinking but did I hear from somewhere the virus is airborn also? Or was I imagining things? spoon
its carried by insects other animals and humans(though wont affect us, we have our own version) it can travel quite fast via insect via animal etc. doesnt last long with out a host in warm weather but in cold weather can remain dormant for around a month. its quite important to avoid other people with rabbits , petshops also if you have had deaths from it as you will most likely carry it for some time afterwards also disinfect everything to do with the rabbits (a strong bleach solution is fine ) wash ane clothing or bedding used with or around rabbits also. while vaccination is a very good idea afaik there are now 3 varieties of RCD affecting rabbits and only the original 1 is vaccinated against. there are very little symptoms so if you have had 1 infected rabbit quickly vaccinate the rest and disinfect everything the vaccination takes 2 weeks to work so if the remaining rabbits are still alive after 2 weeks you are probably sweet. another note a grisly 1 at that its best to burn carcasses of ane infected dead rabbits as these are highly likely to spread it further( thhe original RCD virus is purposely transmitted to farms using infected rabbit guts and meat) plenty more info on the net if u need more

shadowfax
ok, latest areas to be hit are Cardiff, Ohawe Beach & Kaponga. it is believed to have been spread by infected rabbits being sold to a pet shop.
