Gecko
The other day I was reading up on Danios and didn't realise the temperature they can handle. So I thought I'd give it a go with putting them in my goldfish tank, where I have 1 shubunkin, 2 comets, 1 blackmoor, 6 minnows, 1 algae eater and 1 snail. To my surprise they're perfectly fine and haven't shown any signs of being sick. So my question to other members is has anyone actually tried this? :bounce:
Caryl
Danios are fine down to about 18C. Although they can tolerate lower, it isn't good for them and just because they will, doesn't mean you should.
Gecko
Thank you. Well my tank sits at about 20C and doesn't get any colder. So I think they'll be fine. But to be sure, I'm going to put a heater in for the winter season.
whetu
I used to keep danios with my goldfish many years ago. Pays to watch out for them getting a bit nippy though - some of them will get a bad habit of nipping the flowing fins of other fish. (But usually if there are enough danios they keep each other occupied and don't bother anyone else.) Good luck with them!
Gecko
Thank you! I didn't know they nipped. I'll definitely get a few more danios and possibly minnows so they can all school together. :D
axolotl-danio
When I first started fish keeping I had danios in coldwater and the lowest recorded temperature was 14c. I brought them as coldwater danios. I assume they were already acclimatised to that temperature in the shop or they were born/bred in cold water. :bounce:
Gecko
Sounds like that could be the case. Today I decided to change my set up in the tank with a hollow piece of drift wood. The fish seem to love the hiding places. Hehe. On second note, I was very pleased to find out that one of the danios is female as she has a eggy belly. Nana Luke
I've got danios in a pond outside. They've been there for a few months now - although it was over the summer months... so we will see how they go over winter.
