Guest
I got a pair of blue rams at the Animates special, I chose them as they'd paired up at the shop. Last night they swam around together and this morning they were travelling from 2 rocks that I have in my tank as if they were choosing which one to breed on and the females egg tube thing was sticking out a bit. Then after they made a decision of which rock the female has stuck around that rock all day and the males been with her and chasing other fish away. Now the female and the male are staying by the rock and her egg tube is really sticking out, I also done a cooler water change, I heard they clean their surfuce that they'll breed on, what tdo they do when they clean it? Dave+Amy
Oh man if ONLY I didn't lose all my life savings at the Wellington Cup races then I would've gone for a few more Rams lol
Guest
Yeah, thanks tracy. I don't think they'll have much luck as they're in a community tank and if the eggs hatch and they leave the crater thing they'll fall off the rock and into the gravel  ,. One day I'll move them to a breeding tank but no space at the moment as I have my breeding panda corys in a tank and I had to move lots of things around to get space for them. Atleast I'll have my baby corys who are ment to hatch tonight :bounce: :bounce: :bounce:
phoenix44
put the eggs in the same tank as the baby cories.

Guest
I'm going to leave the parents and eggs where they are this time and see how they go as they're great parents so far, they take turns watching the fry and sometimes both of them gaurd it but they're not chasing all the fish away for some reason??? The platys can be right next to them until and the rams don't do anything until they're right by on top of the eggs but the black widows and gold rams can't get anywhere near them  . Does this sound normal?
Guest
The eggs survived the night and are I've fed the tank but instead of one gaurding while the other eats they were both out there . They are really peaceful parents so hopefully they may even hatch them themselves but from what Ive read the usually eat them :-? . How long do they usually last? phoenix44
the eggs usually get to the wiggling stage, where the babies are about to hatch, and then they get eaten. so you can give it a go and let them try taking care of the kids in the community tank, or you could siphon them out, put them in a spare tank. Dave+Amy
hope you get to grow out some fry! I'll be keen to do a fry swap
Guest
Yeah but I think the parents will be related as I got them from animates like you and they seem to have certain people that they get their fish from  . How are your fry going? So far my parents are really layed back and don't seem to stressed on chasing everything away but the male is doing most the gaurding today as the female is there for about 5 seconds and the males gaurding them for like 5 minutes . Do you think I should leave the parnts in there and see if they gaurd the fry or take them out as wrigglers?
phoenix44
not always. there are heaps of different suppliers, ranging from auckland to new plymouth to chch, and they import fish at different times and stuff. so the fry swap may be a good idea. i never breed related fish, as that narrows the gene pool. (thus my views on hybrids and how they are good.. BUT lets NOT get into that lol).
Guest
Really? Thaen I'd love to do a fry swap if I manage to raise some which I'm thinking about taking the wrigglers away but then I think it's not giving them a chance to raise them. What do you guys think? How often do they breed?
phoenix44
Really? Yep!
Guest
 . When the eggs hatch into wrigglers do they still stick to the rock or just rest on it?
Guest
Also what colour are they when they've hatched?
phoenix44
they wiggle about in one place initially. and then they start to move or rather clumsily fall around for about 6 -7 hours. after that they can swim but not very well...they get the hang of it when the egg sac disappears. Guest
Ok, I'n going to move the fry when/if they hatch but I heard they hatch between 2-3 days, is it more likely to be closer to the 2nd or the 3rd day as I don't really want them to eat them (about 1/3 - 1/2 the eggs are gone )
