Alan
I've been asked by the curator of Kelly Tarltons, to whom he can refer for proper information about setting up and running a Marine Tank. He has many enquiries from visitors during and after their visits on how to go about this interesting part of the hobby. Is there anyone prepared to field these questions, do you know someone that would, are there any specialist club in Auckland that they could be refered to. I know you guys, gals, will come thru Thanks Alan

Alan
I know JS, they weren't too happy with dealing with some one financially involved like them, in the hobby. Alan

jetskisteve
GREAT in that case what does it cost to set up a half decent reef tank
RnB
if you do lots yourself, import own kit, buy second hand etc.... I reckon it would cost you around $12-$15 per litre for a good setup..... 8)

chimera
nice RnB, I agree with that pricing. Thats about what each of my setups cost
RnB
of course the cost per L for a nano could be a lot lower, but then you can also crash it SO much easier.... I am an idiot thats why I have a 500L tank bit like a supertanker, slow to turn bad... but also hard to get out of poo once bad I guess..... my advice to anyone is to buy a complete setup from someone selling one... yes it looks more $... but its NOT... lots of things are expensive... costs a lot just to keep a boat at westhaven.. let alone the maint costs ........ Marine is expensive.. but its WAY cheaper then lots of sports out there....
jetskisteve
show us pics then always good to see more tanks, theres a thread on pics.
chimera
That pricing per litre should be for your main tank only - ie: dont include sumps. my 540 litre (main) tank works out to cost around $8k (that's $15 per litre). Add on another $2k for my sump room downstairs and incidentals (460 litres of refug and sump) and I've got a pretty sweet 1,000 litre setup for $10k I had a 320 litre main tank prior with small 90 odd litre sump and that cost around $4,500 or so, or about $14 per litre. Completely agree re: buy it in one go, my original budget was $2k. ha haaa, blew that one WAY out of proportion! I know for sure you could do it cheaper with DIY and workarounds, but Im lazy too and want to keep maintenance to a minimum and spend more time enjoying the hobby and its beauty. Ira
I think I'm only around $5/liter I'd include the price of the sump and everything, just not the volume. But, yeah, right now I'm around $1.8k and still have a handful of little bits of equipment I want. That's for hardware alone. Well, live rock and base rock, I'd call that hardware. chimera
But you're way short of heaps of things Ira - some that you still need and sure, some that are luxury items. Got corals? No, coz you're FOWLR right? Got a chiller? Got a temperature controller? Got a Calcium Reactor? etc etc... you just cant compare $5 per litre versus $15 to do it properly. Alan
OK Thanks for that guys. I have it sussed out now. many thanks for all the offers. Boy do you guys know how to change a thread  lol  Alan
Ira
I've got 3 corals, actually. Small ones. And if I find I need a calcium reactor, I'll get a calcium reactor. But soft corals aren't as demanding for calcium so I'll probably be fine with dosing kalk, once I get enough to worry about it anyway. Damn, I forgot to add the price of my skimmer, bump that $5 up to $7. If you want to talk the new, retail price for everything, make it somewhere around $15.60/liter. Doc Holiday
Damn! I was working to a budget of $5k, I will be buying all equipment new for maximum lifespan, so you could just about double that figure I guess. Just as long as no one tells the misses. My famous last words (It doesn't cost to much more than my freshwater setup darling!) 8)
