grubster
Hi all, We have a problem with our gold spot plec ( BOB ), about a week ago he got a bloated stomach like he had an excess of wind. I contacted 2 LFS and they both diagnosed over the phone differently. one said dropsie and the other said it was constipated. we have been trying to get him to eat peas as apperanly that will help with constipation. Today i noticed he has developed blister like air pockets under his skin, and its stretched the sin that much that they are transperant bubbles. Is Bob going to pop???? attached is 2 photos the first is the bloated stomach and the second is of the blisters. Thanks in advance, troy ps how do i post photos on here

phoenix44
ah.... heard of this happening to another member on this site. make it eat some peas. and an epsom salt solution will be good for it. in time it should reduce in size and then vanish. if not... well then you can try withdrawing the air - but you need to know a thing or 2 about basic fish anatomy, an injection; and you need a very very steady hand. hope this helps. Adrienne
here you go might pay to post under diseases or ask a mod to shift this. Its definately not dropsy and I'm quite sure its not constipation. I would imagine something bacterial but I don't know much about these fish at all. Navarre
What temp is tank at? Some times turning up the tank temp can help with bloat and the like so might help with bubbles as well Navarre

Caryl
NEVER medicate a fish unless you are sure of the disease for which you are medicating. Does this sound like it?... Gas Bubble Disease is caused by a sudden dramatic change in gas pressure in the aquarium. This can happen by changing too much water at one time or by adding cold water to the fish tank. Gas bubbles form in the fins and skin of the fish. The bubbles look like blisters and are very easy to see. The skin will crackle if you run your finger across it. If not treated in time, gas bubbles in the bloodstream will kill the fish. The treatment is to add alot of aeration to the aquarium. Lights should be left off to minimize stress. If you see alot of bubbles that have already popped, consider adding a general antibiotic to guard against secondary infection
lmsmith
I've seen that in a magazine too, I think that does look like gas bubble. Have you done a big w/c or added cold water? I've also heard that lowering the water level in the tank to the lowest you had it in the w/c and adding a bit each day can help. Basically it's like the bends, you need to match the pressure the fish is under because it had a pressure change. If it's not eating, that's not a good sign
Navarre
Well done Caryl this is commonly called "The Bends" LOL Navarre

Navarre
nope when a gas in in solution evaporates it is called boiling when solution is blood and gass boils it forms bubbles. Bubbles form under skin where blood pools or at highest point, Brain or at top of sternum in people, fins and body of fish and in gut. Bubbles cause all sorts of problems (decompression illness) from surgical emphysema to pins and needles to death. When this happens under water the common name for it is "bends" If the tank has had a sudden O2 depletion, temp change or chemical alteration it changes the viscosity of the solution (blood) or the gas concentration in the blood. This causes the "bends". This looks like bubbles under the skin. So resolve chemical imbalance (water test and adjust) resolve Temp issues (in this case maybe raise temp as this will drive O2 out of water and draw gas from in fish out of fish) or resolve gas depletionin water( I know the last two contridct them selves but you treat the cause not the symptom, Thank you Dr Frank N Furter) Anyway HTH Navarre
