bedazzled
Hi all, I have been cruising lots of overseas sites looking for ideas for my newt tank, I see lots of people use cork bark as a background, just stuck on with silicone. Is this available here or is there any other sort of bark that would be suitable? It wouldn't be in the water, just behind the land portion of the tank. Any suggestions appreciated. Thanks Bedazzled
Caryl
Bark appears to be very expensive and mostly available here as cork tiles. I gather these are not suitable. You can get small bits of bark as orchid growers use them.
bedazzled
Thanks Caryl There is no reason I couldn't just use a few hunks of bark off... say a Totara tree though is there? I wouldn't think it would be poisonous to the newts, would it?
Caryl
I honestly don't know. Insects etc live in and on the bark in the wild though. I gather it isn't going to be submerged?
bedazzled
No, will only be background to the land area of the tank, no where near the water, although I guess it will be quite damp in there.
Stu :)
You can buy cork bark in NZ from model shops; more specifically model shops that specialize in model railroads/trains. A few I know are- Merv Smith Hobbies http://yellow.co.nz/companies/Hobby-Supplies/Merv-Smith-Hobbies-Ltd/101143618_967.html The Model Shop http://yellow.co.nz/companies/Hobby-Supplies/The-Model-Shop/100496859_967.html I'd try the 'The Model Shop' first as he's got the BIGGEST range of model railroad scenic items in I've seen in NZ and that's where I bought mine last time I needed some... for model purposes not fishy/reptile stuff.
