silva
wow :-? , i didnt notice any water discolour, didnt check ph but mine is surrounded by driftwood so that should help buffer it right? aquascape still in the making
Southerrrngirrl
No I wasn't talking about water discolouration, I was talking about the high pH is has created, turns out its not exactly an accurate test as I tested in a much lower volume of water! Guess the driftwood would help buffer it. I have driftwood too so.. might be ok.
phoenix44
have i understood right? you have pots sitting in a bucket or similar and that pH rose really high. you haven't tinkered with the tank yes?
Southerrrngirrl
Thats right.
phoenix44
sweet. I wouldn't put the pots in the tank unless you intend on raising the pH. just let the pH in the bucket stabilise to a level you think is appropriate and then add them to the tank one by one. the buffer is contained in your water, not the driftwood. what sort of pots are these? ive seen many used in tanks with no changes to the pH levels etc. also used a pot to breed, kribs, firemouths etc etc.. Southerrrngirrl
they are just terracotta clay flower pots, non-glazed.
Caper
Ok, just to verify adding terracotta pots can change water parameters, well in this case pH??? Caper
Southerrrngirrl
Yep. Well it did in my tank. Others have stated they haven't noticed any significant change. I added one of the halves a couple of days ago, tested the water last night, pH was sitting at about 8.2. It normally sits at 7.0. I've taken the pot out now. Lost a tiger barb last night, not sure if it was related to he change or not but not taking that risk. Will have to find something else to make hidey holes with. Caper
Sorry you lost your tiger barb! Gee, you see alot of aquariums with those pots in them so I figured they were ok to use, ah I haven't tried them yet! Do you just use regular sandpaper to smooth the edges??? Southerrrngirrl
Yeah those Tiger Barbs have been dropping like flies. Only got one survivor now. Assuming the last one was a victim of harrassment from the other. My husband gave me the sandpaper, I have no idea what grade it was, I know it was the wet & dry stuff though.
