Brianemone
anyone have moonlights ????(on their tanks not for emotional reasons) im thinking of wiring up some blue LED's cheap to run and setup
Ira
Like a moonlight? I'd actually like to get a handful of them. They're relatively common.
njd
I got some from http://www.dpt.co.nz/leds.html about the best price I could find at the time, they came with a resistor for 12v as well.
Ira
Hmmm, Those aren't bad prices. Anyone know what the ideal wavelength for a moonlight is?
Ira
It looks like the best wavelength is 465-470nm, which is what those leds are rated at. Comparing prices to dick smith's blue leds, they're twice as bright for 1/6th the cost. Woah.
Brianemone
those look pertty how many per foot would you think?? i think three or four on my nano would be heaps (two foot long) heck come to think of it for a nano i could wire up a heap of them to have massive amounts of lighting even for daytime
lduncan
at 3000mcd I'd say around 8 every two foot minimum. Layton
Brianemone
for moonlight or daylight?? i assume moonlight
lduncan
yeah moonlight. 3000mcd per LED is not that bright. You can get 1mmx2mm blue LED which put out around 4500mcd. Layton
Brianemone
where would you source them from? so far my two options are the previously mentioned site and good old dicksmiths
lduncan
the site posted previously is the cheapest price i have ever seen for blue LED's. The ones i mentioned are around $3 but are surface mount and very small. DS is a rip off. Layton
Ira
Ok, I broke down and bought 10. But now I can't find the power adapter I know I have around somewhere.
Brianemone
im going to get about 20 or so do some on my tank and set up some for my brothers what do you guys think of a little bit of "ocean green" thrown in to the mix???
Interfecus
Why use a power adapter, Ira? You could run it for months on batteries.
Interfecus
Don't moonlight systems usually have a flickering effect? You could do that quite easily with a 555 timer.
lduncan
the flickering comes from the water movement not the light itself.
jetskisteve
Ask Chimera he just got one
breakaway
Check this out.... www.picaxe.com - New versatile microcontrollers which dont need developer boards, just a couple of resistors and a serial cable. And check www.trademe.co.nz for LEDs
chimera
Got one $60 second hand off Alois. Nice tidy units with good reflectors, haven't plugged it in yet as i need a transformer for it. Will be putting it in the new tank when I design and build a really flash hood (perhaps electronic pulleys for added wank-value ) that will incorporate the M/H's and moonlight. Buggered if I remember what the web site is,... I need to find out again to find out the spec's of the transformer... Alois you got that site? Can you post please? Ira
Hmmm, That's an idea Inter. Though, it'd make it even more complicated, have to get a pair of 6V batteries or just wire 9AAs in a series. But, anyway, I've got the adapter floating around the house somewhere, might as well use it.
lduncan
Check this out.... www.picaxe.com - New versatile microcontrollers which dont need developer boards, just a couple of resistors and a serial cable. Nooo... Dirty, dirty, PIC's, one of the most hated micro's around. Atmel produce a much better, less expensive micros with more features. The mega series is quite nice for an 8-bit. breakaway
Yeah... Ive been trying to get into Atmel. Can you tell me if I need a developer board to program a MEGA 8535-P? Thanx
lduncan
Nope, just a parallel port and a few resistors. Layton
breakaway
Got a circuit diagram ? And possibly a PCB layout ?
lduncan
yip. I'll pm you later with it after i find it. Layton
