Olly
What's wrong with my guppies? They do this and then die a day or so later One at a time, I have lost ~20 good males in the last 6 weeks

Caryl
A few more details would be helpful. What size is the tank? Filtration? How long has it been set up? What other fish are in there?
Olly
tank has been set up for 3 months. its 30L. It has a foam bubble operated filter. There are about 30 male guppies in there, thats it
lmsmith
That looks like a swim bladder infection to me. Have you salted the tank?

Olly
not since when the tank was set up 3 months ago
Caryl
That's a lot of fish in a small tank that is only 3 months old. Have you checked the water parameters? Buoyancy problems can be a result of poor water quality or internal infection. If infection, it may also show a lack of appetite, lethargy, redness etc.
lmsmith
I don't know how scientific this is, but when I keep only male guppies together, they seem to get sick more easily...maybe it's something to do with that?
Caryl
Too much testosterone you reckon?
lmsmith
I know it sounds crazy, but girls seem to do ok alone, boys need the attention I guess
Caryl
Human males die younger too if they are on their own
Olly
i had the water tested when the last one was doing this and the petshop said the water was fine, no problems at all 2/3 of the fish are less than 1.5cm - only babies
ryanjury
Have you had the same fish in the tank all the time? And where did the fish come from? I only ask because I know that some shops are having trouble keeping guppies alive they seem to be so inbred or have some other issues that they just gradually all keel over and die.. Might be something to consider?
Olly
that could be it I guess but then why aren't the females dying too? they come from all over the place, and most aren't related to each other. Most that have died have been young ones about 6 weeks old
ryanjury
Another theory is that some imported guppies carry diseases that they are immune to and these are all slightly different.. You will be fine as long as you keep the fish together but as soon as you add them from different places the different diseases wipe them all out.. Just something I read unsure if it has actually been proven or anything?
Olly
Oh great But again why is it only the boys?
