Stella
There should be billions of shrimp up your way! At least there were when I was up there.... I guess it depends on the state of the streams you are looking in... but still. Ok, HOW are your looking for them? Grab a net, put it downstream of some vegetation (waterweed or grasses trailing in the water). Use your hand or foot or a stick to wriggle the vegetation, starting further upstream from the net and work your way towards it. Lift net and go at the hoard of shrimp! Alternatively put your net downstream of a rock and lift the rock. The current should flush everything into the net. These are also good ways of catching fish, koura etc. (The shrimp can be a little deceptive. They are see-through and some will jump about and others will lie still. They can look like bits of muck rather than shrimp... They are small, up to about 3.5cm usually.)
oeminx
i was using that technique so it might have been the stream/river. Alot of people swim in it could it be that? what is a good stream to look in?
Stella
oh... ok... not sure why that would be.... maybe it is the people swimming in it... Try another stream? Hopefully someone from Auckland will pop up and name a site to try. When I was up there in January they just seemed to be everywhere. northland chic
We went fishing in the drains next to the road up here about a week ago and got lots of shrimp. More shrimp than anything else and they weren't that hard to get. I take it these would be the freshwater ones? Are they the same ones on tm that breed in brackish water or strictly freshwater ones? I know my mother in law tried to breed them and had no luck. If they needed brackish though that would explain abit. Thanks
davidb
I was doing an invert sample on Oakley creek just a while back and got about 50 shrimp with a kick going upstream from down where the river goes under the road up to by the service station (round the back of unitec)
oeminx
ok will try Oakley Creek how deep is it, gumboots or waders?
davidb
waders, or cold wet legs.
davidb
I went from where the creek goes up the road upstream to the Litter trap, youll see the litter trap if you park at the service station and walk down the path to the creek about 200, north of the service station
purplecatfish
so does anyone know where in west Auckland area i can find some or have some spare availableTitirangi Beach and Mill Bay have them, I could show you where one weekend if you want or you could have a couple of mine. Where did you find the limpets?
oeminx
i found the limpets in a river near Karamatura. Where at Titirangi Beach can the shrimp be found i might have a look this weekend.
purplecatfish
From the carpark take the footbridge over the stream towards the playground. Shrimp like to hide in the grass that overhangs the edges. I climbed into the water (knee deep) and dragged a net through the underneath of the grass. ninjafroglet
Last night we went out to a stream thats only 200-300m from our house that we hadn't tried yet. -.- God knows why we didn't sooner, we found zillions of shrimp, inanga, torrent fish and a decent sized eel. We caught a few of everything, and now it's just a matter of quarantining the things we want to keep, and letting the rest free. Tomorrow morning I'll take some pics of a few of the unknowns (I think I have an eel fry in there?) Also, it seems as with Stella's, the limpets did not survive, I guess they just aren't suited to being moved, or megatrons eating them. Anywho, thanks to those who helped in suggestions. preacher
Hope you didn't bring home the eel! It must be a very fast flowing stream for torrent fish, what a cool find P.
ninjafroglet
Its actually not the fast, and even then they were hiding around the edges under leaves. But it was still pretty cool =D
