Ira
If you want to be really good probably artificial marine salt would likely be best.
newfisher
Dumb question I know but I read about adding salt all the time. Is this added because the fish are sick or just as an everyday thing? I have a community tank should I be adding salt when I clean the filters to keep the fish happy? Caryl
Some people like to use a little salt as a "tonic". They are freshwater fish though so salt is not necessary. There are some fish, like mollies, originate in estuaries where the water's salinity changes with the tides and they actually do better with a little added to their tank but not the majority. spoon
if u dont want to shell out for proper marine salt an organic salt will be best a lot of ordinary non iodised salts still have a free flowing agent in them
Simian
I cant remember where but, I read an article saying that marine salt that you buy from the LFS has some additives in it that makes it not suitable for use in a fresh w aquarium
David R
Some people like to use a little salt as a "tonic". They are freshwater fish though so salt is not necessary. I usually add a bit with water changes, as with my currently over-stocked tank someone has usually been giving someone else a hard time and there's a few missing scales or torn fins.
