Geophagus Surinamensis Breeding Age?

Does anyone know the age/ size of geo surinamensis for beginning to pair up and breed.

My larger (obvious) male and a smaller possible female, have dug a hole and are chasing others away.

The male is only just starting to show small tail fin extensions. He is about 10-12 cm long and she? is about 8-9 cm long.

I havent seen any shimmying or lip locking( assuming they do this )

Would be cool if it was a pair, but in my opinion they are still very young.

Anyone able to help here?

If 2 of them have dug a hole and are defending it then its a good sign :)

I think trying to define an age/size for a fish to breed is hard to do as some fish grow faster/slower and some mature at different rates depending on how they were raised/water conditions/diet etc.. Best to just go on how they are acting to point you in the right direction.

Cheers for the reply Ryan.

I agree with you, just that geos are very slow growers and they are at least half the size of the of the ones in the display tank at wetpets.

thought they would be far to immature to try and breed yet. Maybe im wrong.Hoping someone else who keeps (Afrikan)or has kept would have some idea.

Will prob just have to wait and see

same as ryan said, mine started breeding at a relative size to yours, though it was a few years ago

didn't do a lot of lip locking though, they are an amazing parent

had 6 in a community tank that bred in there, weren't too agressive with other fish

ended up seperating the pair out so it was less stress on them when they were guarding the young
