skaffen
I'm planning on building a double skinned fry net, is hot glue safe to use for freshwater aquariums?
skaffen
Did some googling, looks like it's fine. I'll post some pics tonight.
lmsmith
I can't see it sticking for very long...I guess it depends on what you're sticking it to.
skaffen
I stuck small EPP foam inserts all over a fry net, as a spacer so I could double skin the net. I think it'll last because the glue actually melts the foam a little and bonds really well (I've made RC planes out of this stuff, and the foam tears before the glue joins break), and I pushed down so the glue goes right through the the netting before it sets. I'll post some pics when I get home, you'll see
skaffen
Righto, here's the pics. I ended up with a good 2cm gap between the two net layers. I've got some Bolivian Ram fry in, and they seem safe from the rest of the community. The glue worked well, had to pull really, really hard to get one spacer off, and it actually left foam behind - the glue bond was still intact... Gluing foam spacers on Finished and installed, with fry nice and safe. Other fish are ignoring the net. Bit messy on top - the outer net is actually a "Delicates Washing Bag" I scored at Countdown for $5, and I had to gather up some extra material and glue it down. -Simon
Ira
Nice, that should work well.
purplecatfish
Excuse my ignorance, but why go double skinned?
mitzy
Excuse my ignorance, but why go double skinned? So that the fish in the tank cannot suck the babies through the net
skaffen
Yeah, I mistakenly thought a fry net was safe in a community tank. My Platies and Tiger Barbs proved my wrong, and in one night I lost the Bolivian Ram fry I put in it. Luckily a second female spawned this week, and I got most of the fry in the modded net yesterday. It's working well, no losses in 24 hours, and the other fish are ignoring the net You can't miss it - it's the big white thing...

fishfreak
Thats a good idea i may have to do something similar. as for hot glue its only ever lasted a few weeks at most for me it tends to just come away when its been fully submerged
