SilverBlade86
My Kribs seemed to have spawned yet again, however I was just watching them take care of the fry when I saw the father either catch one in his mouth or eat it. Which one happened? After catching the fry in his mouth he headed back near the entrance of the nest and came out again after.
Adrienne
Could have been either ime. How old are they? My first pairing I only could keep the female in with them and she raised hundreds successfully. The second pairing I removed the male and gradually over a couple of weeks the mother ate the lot
SilverBlade86
Well, I think they are probably about a year and half. This would be their third or forth spawning, but they seemed to be always unsuccessful at raising fry. Somehow the lot always disappears. I'm worried because it seems weird for a non mouth breeder cichlid.
Adrienne
Are the fry free swimming? or was it a bubble with a tail (if you get my meaning) that escaped. My kribs were always okay with the babies for the first 3 days after they became free swimming. I suggest you look at moving the babies out and raising them seperately. Others may disagree, By the way I have seen the females move fully developed fry in their mouths and put them back with the bunch.
Dixon1990
They catch the fry in their mouth that are wandering awa from the 'nest' and spit them back where the rest are, could have been this.
SilverBlade86
Yeah the fry were free swimming. I knew something was up after I did a water change about a week ago when I didn't see both parents for a day or two. I'm guessing that the fry might have hatched about 4 days ago. Well its a relief that some people have seen them catch the fry and shove them back into the nest. I'll take a closer look and see if there are any fry remaining. SilverBlade86
Just one last post to confirm that Kribs do indeed catch wayward fry with their mouths. I saw the mother trying to catch one of her larger fry in her mouth and failed repeatedly. In the end she finally managed to catch it tail first and spat it back with the others. Zabman
Angels catch the fry in their mouths when they young "stray from the herd" and spit em back with the others - Angels certainly are not mouth brooders, perhaps the Kribs are doing the same. Deno
I have some kribs but they haven't bred, I was told that once they hatch, you need to remove the parent who isn't looking after the fry, could be either the female or the male
