si_sphinx
Is it ok to feed wetas to my Oscars and jags? found a few in my wood shed and was wondering if they would harm the fish or not?
tHEcONCH
Should be fine, but be aware that your Oscars might refuse to eat anything else if they really like them.
Afrikan
Should be fine, but be aware that your Oscars might refuse to eat anything else if they really like them. We are talking about Oscars here...  I have yet to meet an Oscar that refuses any form of tucker.... (unless it's unwell)  I have fed live food to our Oscars off and on, and they have resumed eating as normal... pellet foods etc... tHEcONCH
My big old female will only eat turtle treats, brine shrimp (go figure) or live house and crane flies. Anything else is below her standards
David R
I'm not sure how much nutritional value they'll have, plus they have some pretty sharp bits. Maybe order some crickets if you want to feed your oscars insects and leave the native (endangered?) ones alone...
Afrikan
 She must be one of those Hyacinth Bucket (Bouquet) type Oscars with the too higher standards... gee where did you find her, they hard to find

Afrikan
Actually I was thinking about the Weta thing... before I posted earlier and thought maybe some locusts or crickets as David mentioned, would be better... I don't think I could go as far as feeding Weta as such to any of our fish, they are beautiful creatures. I have only ever seen one Weta in our area before.. something smaller and less spiney as David mentioned would be a better alternative. Scuba Sam
If your wetas are from the woodshed they are probably cave wetas - gorgeous things. My cat used to catch them and I felt terrible. I'd try just a leg first to see if they will crunch them. There are sharp spines on the legs. Keep us posted...
Dixon1990
So they would be good for puffers then! Maybe not so good for the oscars by the sound of it.
si_sphinx
ok thanks , ill let them go then. They are everywhere down here.
Afrikan
Ummmm if they have sharp spines on the legs, I would totally forget about trying any such leg  You want your Oscars insides to be healthy and non perforated
si_sphinx
What about the jags, THEY should be ok eating them, they seem to eat anything as soon as it hits the water
Afrikan
Anything with sharp spines I wouldn't be throwing to any fish, you never know where that leg might lodge itself, IMO it is better to be safer than sorry... 8)
David R
They will probably eat them, but why are you so keen to feed them? If you want to vary/improve the fishes diet then get some crickets and gutload them with vitamins. If you're more into bloodsports more to the philippines and take up cock fighting.

si_sphinx
i ended up just chucking them in the tank and the jag ate them real quick. don't think they hurt him. the wetas didn't have ant spines or anything. not sure what kind they were. nemines
don't weta also have heaps of nasty bacteria on their spiny legs?
markvs
as far as I know it would in fact be illegal to feed the wetas to any fish. To my knowledge they are pretected and killing one may open you up to a $200 fine So, If I am correct, it would be better to let the little beasties go, By the way, any one know where I can find water hyacinth?? :bounce:
Afrikan
I agree that the little critters should be released, go crickets or locusts.. 8) We should be taking care of our Weta... no feeding them to our non native fish  By the way, any one know where I can find water hyacinth?? :bounce:   As far as I am aware water hyacinth is a swear word on this site
markvs
just a little gentle sarcasm, indicating I myself have disposed of the little critters , once by axe- clean beheading
