Benny
I got a whole lot of rocks when I was down in the west coast last christmas but I didnt use them because when i stuck one in momentarily it appeared to fizz. I know my tank water isint vinegar but was this just air bubbles escaping or was the rock releasing minerals into the water?
Caryl
My guess (while knowing nothing about it ) would be air bubbles. Try the vinegar test. Any idea what sort of rock it was? Pumice-like ones will fizz just because of the air holes I think. One of our club members belonged to the rock and mineral club and she was a mine (no pun intended) of information. Unfortunately, she lost her fight with cancer earlier this year so I have lost my rock expert. We miss her very much too.
Warren
Did it fizz lots or just a small stream of fine bubbles from a couple of places. Some rocks have fissures in them that release air when put in the aquaium. If you are uncertain, drain some water from your aquarium into a bucket. Measure and record the pH. Put in some of the rocks and leave for 1-2 days. Measure the pH again and compare to the original. Any change, - rocks no good.
Ira
Depends on if it was foamingish fizz or just bubbles. I've got a lot of rocks that let out an impressive amount of bubbles when I put them in the tank. They just look like normal rocks but have maybe 10 streams of constant bubbles for an hour after putting them in the tank.
Warren
Hi Ira, I've had rocks that behave similarly for the first hour or so. It has never been a problem yet. All I've done is check the pH every 6 hours or so for the first couple of days just to make sure all is ok.
