new Iwaki turned up this arvo, finally!!! will hook it up tonight and post some new pic's :) what recommendations do everyone have for (quiet and reliable yet cost-effective) pumps for closed loops? (besides eheim) something that does 4,000+ litres per hour. ocean runner?

yup indeedy, even asked the wife to check before i get home! it got held up at customs for the last 3 days - they were all anal about gst etc.

re: pumps for closed loops, i was looking for two. either ocean runner 6500 http://bcreef.com/p-ocean.html or mag-drive model 18 http://bcreef.com/p-mag.html i assume both must be made in 240V versions. thoughts?

for a closed loop pump as it is not as essential and wouldn't be a huge catastrophy if it broke down would it be woth looking at buying a high flow water pump form an agracultural store they are made to pump the likes of sewrage so i doubt they would deteriorate and may be much cheeper

Iwakis and Ehiems for my closed loops. Because I have holes through the bottom of the tank, I want to ensure that if they fail they can't leak.

I would love another IWAKI or 2 for my other 2 closed loops, would consider trade of EHIEM 1262 and 1250s for IWAKIs if anyone has one or 2 for sale.

dan, as pies says, i have holes drilled in my tanks too so reliability is key. i was thinking about another two iwaki's but they'd have to be the love daddy models which are more costly than ocean runners or mag drives (of course, reliability is why) i love iwaki's coz they're so damn quiet! may consider 2 x iwaki 40's for the closed loops. hard to justify cost right at the moment though and I have already promised RnB that he can buy my current 40RXT once the 55RLT goes in. no drama's, just a matter of saving a bit more!

The american made Iwaki's are a very cost effective alternative to the japanese ones, you'll have to see if they do them in 240v though. Otherwise I've heard alot of good remarks about the mag drives (although I thought they were submersibles) so they would be a good bet at a much lower cost.

Iwaki pumps - how much difference? Well here's a before and after shot of the water coming out the sea-swirl. The first was from my Iwaki 40-RXT, the second is the 55-RLT (the small spray coming out is from a hole I drilled incase power goes off, doesn't drain the top 2 inches of the tank!) Second model is high-head pump. I had to muck around with the timber mount that I originally made so the 55RLT fit, out with the skillsaw etc :)

What a difference!!! Even the height of the water above my overflow has gone up about 5mm (which meant I had to add about 10 litres of water to the sump!!!)

I've also ordered a Tunze CO2 regulator from reefonline so the calcium reactor should go in end of next week :D

it's all good. have enquired about 2 x Iwaki 40RLXT's from Marine Depot - comes to just over $1K landed (includes shipping and GST - thats for two of them) for closed loops. A little on the pricey side for me. Am probably going to see how the Ocean Runners go as it should be about half this price for the same litres/hour. Still plenty to do - and there will be many pic's to come on this thread - patience is all! I managed to put a door on the sump room today which is pretty cool, so much easier than a piece of gib board and a towel and so much better to keep the heat in thus saving on electricity. pic will be up tomorrow :D

Why 40s for the closed loops? Why not 30s? I have a 30 which I am going to use, and if I could find another 1 or 2 of those that would be HEAPS of flow for a single closed loop. I will use EHIEM 1262s for the ballance of NON-IWAKIs. :)

i only have 2 x closed loops for my tank (with 4 outlets alternated by 2 x scwds - yet to be hooked up). not too much difference between rxt30 and eheim 1262's (eheim 1262 @ 900gph vs iwaki 30rxt @ 1100gph @ 0'ft head). eheim's are cheaper though. hence the reason for 40rxt's (1500gph) to make a significant difference. otherwise, why not just get eheim 1262's as save some dosh? (eheim 1262 approx half the price of an iwaki 30rxt) alternately, im seriously considering streams but the wife will have my nuts on a plate if i forked out for them :-?

Gotta have the STREAMS :)

I'll be running 3 Streams on the new tank, + the 3 closed loops and the tank return through 2 sea swirls. I am hoping that will be enough. I would like to think I can run 2x Sea Swirls with one IWAKI 100, what do you think. Be approx 12 feet of head.

just make sure it's the RLT model (pressure rated) versus the RXT model (high flow) the 100rlt does about 1800gph at 12 feet of head. this is pretty much spot on for 2 x 3/4" sea-swirls as they're rated at 850gph each (plus you'll probably lose a little flow because of twists and turns in the pipe - just make sure you use 1" pipe!!! im running 3/4" so am losing a little - but aren't too concerned as im only running a single 3/4" sea-swirl) check out marinedepot, they are priced well there - you should be able to land it (including shipping and gst) for about nzl$700. your best bet is to double check with ed at aquarium currents ([email protected]) bloody helpful guy - but will probably just confirm what i've already said :) trust me, i've been through all this @#$%$^ already getting the wrong iwaki twice.

Layton - I could use a holiday! ;)

I have updated my thread whenever there has been something to post.

My website (homereef) is being moved to Aussie and I have found an unlimited bandwith unlimited diskspace hosting option for free, so would like to get that moved ASAP.

The new site will be similar format to the last, so expect more info on there than here.

Starting to get a little anxious about the new tank now, been so long. I hope its in the house within 2 weeks, but don't want it here until we finished renovating the HT room and Dining room. But expect some inhome pics within the next 3 weeks for sure.

Pie

PS: Thanks Chimera i'll be in touch closer to the time about the Iwaki.

Unlimited bandwidth, unlimited space, free? Where do I sign up? Sounds too good to be true.

Layton

One of the perks of working in IT.

Japanese Motor Iwaki is whre its at, the American made motors are the 'poor cousin' of the Iwaki family, but cheaper.

  • 2 weeks later...

some pic's for those interested, some a tad boring but an update nonetheless!...

hung a new door on the room. this has dramatically reduced cold drafts therefore stops the heaters cycling on/off (and saves power!) Still have to put a ceiling in though :D An easy task later on in the month.

Here's the brand new Iwaki MD-55RLT hooked up (it's slightly larger than the 40RXT)

sump-with-iwaki4.jpg

and finally a pic of my new Tunze 7077/2 CO2 regulator on a (rented) BOC CO2 bottle. Pity their smallest size is around 7 kg :-? Should last me 1 or 2 years. Will have this hooked up to the Calcium reactor by end of the week (assuming I have time to get some tubing for CO2 this week)
