cichlid7
I was looking at getting it last time it was on TM,but i couldnt get it form amberly :-? yea i have a problem where i buy things and then think now how am i gonna get it home   i have lots of questions but cannot remember most of them lol should i try and bring all the water home so i can set it up straight away or before i get it should i get "new" saltwater and have it in another tank until this one is ready. How long out of the water can the rock be before it dies. AND what is the best way to get it home the guy said it is 1.1m wide (across the front) and 1.7m tall
cichlid7
also is the lighting good enough and for water changes can i use seawater if so where in CHCH is the best place to get it from thanks everyone
Charlie
Um if you can get around 100 liters of the water... It is more mainly the fishes/corals/inverts sake. Um The coral rock is fine if you rap it in news paper. you wont get a cycle aslong as you get it home and set-up ASAP! Have 100-150 of salt water all ready premaid.... The fish will be fine in a polobox, double bagged and with a heat pac for a good 18 hours. 1) get the tank home 2) Set it up 3) Get the tank running with the rock in ASAP 4) Get the Temp at a stable 28-29 5) waite for 3-4 hours 6) Begin the adding of fish
jolliolli
4) Get the Temp at a stable 28-29 25 would be the normal temp for a marine tank
tHEcONCH
Although I run all my tanks (fresh and salty) at 27 with good results (IMO)
cichlid7
so for them temp somewhere between 25 and 29 what water test kits should i buy? I was speaking to the guy and the stand is steal with a bit of chipboard for the front. sounds a bit crap really so i think i will build a new one. So if i setup another tank big enough to put everything in so i have time to set it up Right the first time. the holding tank i can put a skimmer in as ive got a spare one and a few powerheads. Can i get saltwater from somewhere in Christchurch if so where is the best place? Thanks
tHEcONCH
You will need Nitrate, Alkalinity (GH) and low range Phosphate (the Salifert one), and if you intend to keep LPS or SPS you'll also need Calcium. I know people collect NSW from Sumner, but Taylors would be better (fewer 'Bondi cigars')
cichlid7
so what about setting up the temp tank?

tHEcONCH
Definitely, but the others are essential. Re the temporary tank, you can defintely do that, although you'll have to make sure you have plenty of spare water on hand just in case you need to do a water change in case of a nitrite spike etc.
jimbob
small tip from my bad experience - if you are setting up a temp tank keep the fish seperate from any soft corals. only because i had my temp tank crash overnight when a pulsing xenia died and polluted the water

jimbob
yeah, that will be sweet as. ps, that setup looks like it has pretty sweet potential if its just for a few days you'd be fine without the skimmers - but if you have them lying around, why not 8) enjoy marine keeping - but beware, it is a black hole for money im just a newb myself and have alright spent far more than my student budget allows... cichlid7
I'm getting the tank on sunday morning :bounce: I've got 2 temp tanks set up. What is the best PH. its currently between 8 - 9 problem is i went to a pet shop this evening to get the rest of the test kits but they only had the Phosphate one $38 so i thought id leave it and get them all tomorrow morning from somewhere else
jolliolli
yes the test kits can be expensive, if you have freshwater ammonia, nitrite and nitrate kits these can also be used for saltwater, you will get a cloudy look to the result due to the salt but the results will be the same. as suggested earlier salifert make very good test kits, their phosphate kit has a very low range to it so is ideal for accurate phosphate testing
cichlid7
the temp tanks look a bit cloudy is that normal
