Rozski
*watches with interest* Best idea I could come up with was to sweet talk someone who lives near a black sand beach to mail me some (want to do a nice nano tank with my 35 litre)

Cheesejawa
Best place I have seen for black sand is on stewart Island cant remember the name of the beach though. I know its not too helpful but I just thought Id share that. I have bag of it, never thought of using it it in a tank. I thought black sand was iron and can be magnetic, wouldnt affect heaters etc? BigBossPants
Depending on how much you need... Aqua One does a 'black silica' stone, really fine but not quite sand. I bought some recently for my tank and it's great, won't cause blockages if eaten and is pitch black. As far as I know it comes in 1kg bags, usually $5-6 each. Good for a small tank but not really for big ones. The 1kg was able to cover the bottom of my 4' almost when spread thinly over my sand. Just a thought

HaNs
Anyone know if any stores in Auckland sell black sub?
peanut2110
The guy on TM sells it but it's not strictly sand - more a crushed rock. His TM name is oceandose and he couriers it everywhere. A 25kg bag will set you back about $35 - $40 and will cover a 1 - 1.2m long tank no worries.

Yeah.. that black ironsand would be a pain if it got into a filter with a magnetic drive (most of them). It's not actaully magnetic, it's just mostly iron and acts like the iron filings in a science experiment. Ian
