tHEcONCH
It doesn't look particularly well sealed judging by the cooling slots in the back, so it might be OK, but I wouldn't put it above my tank
DantezGirl
dang thanks for that is there anything similar that can sit on the top of the tank
tHEcONCH
Yes, most proper aquarium lights are designed to be used above open tanks - the main difference being that they have a metal body to disapate heat, and usually some way of attaching them to the tank, rather than just sitting on top. Better ones also have two tubes, rather than one, but like everything you get what you pay for, so expect to pay at least double what that cheap and nasty one is going for. Caryl
My tanks are lit by fluorescents in reflectors that just sit on the glass lid.
kd123
You can get an ordinary flouro double light fixture from mitre 10 etc for the same price.... they work fine if it is just sitting on the lid...

Ianab
Is it possible to just get a glass lid cut for the tank? That way you can just sit a basic light like that, or a Mitre10 flouro kit on top of the glass. Ian
