fish_fingers
At what age can one expect a Royal whiptail and twig catfish to show sex e.g. for the males to develop whiskers?
ilah
I had a royal whip that took nearly two years to show cheek bristles and some that were showing at just over a year....so no definate time frame

tHEcONCH
Females begin to look 'fatter' from about six inches long. Its just a rough theory, but judging from how my 30 or so fortnightly spawns are growing out, I suspect males are 'blacker' initially too. The 'brown' ones seem to become females. tHEcONCH
Here's a photo of the latest lot. I've removed the Discus from the tank, so there'll be more chance of this lot growing out.

fish_fingers
Pardon my ignorance, what type of whiptail is that??
tHEcONCH
I bought it as a 'Royal Whiptail' / Sturisoma aureum, but judging by the extensions off its pectoral fins it is possibly actually Sturisoma festivum.
