Heir
Ohk I have 30 odd in my tank and I hope I have enough food in there for them. Just a question is there any food on the market for them? that i could get to them without the fish eating :-? The tank grows algae just like every other tank, but I also have two hillstream loaches and various ramhorns and pond snails in there which keep the algae down. Anyone else keep the shrimps?? Ira
Shrimp pellets? Seriously, if they're anything like saltwater glass shrimp with 30 of them I'd have thought it would be more of a worry about getting food to the fish before the shrimp steal it. Stella
Shrimp eat such tiny amounts that I would be surprised if they needed supplementary feeding. Even that many shrimp. They are so small they can eat things you can't see. They would probably even recycle snail poo..... Thankfully they are see-through so you can tell if they are eating I have heard they like spirulina powder, but it seems like overkill.... Heir
they're native shrimp. probably wouldn't handle higher temps
Dixon1990
It has been done, they just need to be the first tank inhabitants and start at 18 degrees and go up 1 degree every day or 2 till about 25/26 then start adding other fish. Loopy
ohhh sounds like a mission. I shop in TGA is trying to get tropical freshwater shrimps imported. Really! 8) tho that sounds like more of a mission than raising the temp in a tank, imo.
Heir
Just depends what kind of temperatures they can with stand, I dont think they're on the list of species that can't be imported. Could be wrong.
Faran
Not a snowballs chance in heck that freshwater shrimp ever get imported.
Ira
Just depends what kind of temperatures they can with stand, I dont think they're on the list of species that can't be imported. Could be wrong. There is no list of species that can't be imported there is only a list of species that CAN be. Anything not on the allowed list you'd probably need to have an attractive young daughter and start passing her around the executives at MAF and ERMA to get added... Stella
Not a snowballs chance in heck that freshwater shrimp ever get imported. or of native coldwater shrimp 'adjusting' to tropical temperatures.

FYI, there is a list of species that cannot be imported and it's located here. though it's not very detailed. :bounce: http://www.ermanz.govt.nz/no/aboutno/banned.html
CrazDevil
Hi Heir, Was looking for freshwater shrimps when I was still in New Zealand. I got as far as a LFS in Tauranga and at that time (2 years ago) they said they stopped selling them because it ain't popular, so I guess they are back at it. Anyways I keep some shrimps (30 in total) in my 180 L tank at the moment, some Crystal Red Shrimp, Ninja Shrimp and Glass Shrimp (I have just moved to Melbourne after my partner vetoed every decision I made). They basically eat anything you give them; algae, flakes, veges. They are great stuff and fun to watch. Good to hear that some people have them. I assumed that you bought some freshwater glass shrimps.
Heir
Thanks for that CrazDevil! They're the native shrimp I caught out of a river lol They're doing really well. Really seem to like it so far. I can't get flake down to them as my minnows, danios, goldfish and paradisefish get it before it sinks lol Think they would probably munch on the small bits the fish miss. Theres abit of algae in the tank which I see them eat. Well from what the store said I don't think they import them, just get them off their suppliers, so if people supply them they can't be as illegal as everyone says. :bounce: I can see how they won't be very popular. I think they're totally awesome but alot of my friends are like.. meh. they're just shrimps.
