Rozski
OK, so I would like some fish for my 170 litre planted tank. Only have 3 bristlenoses, 6 neons and a pair of blue rams in there at the moment. I know the basics of what fish are around, but chatting about it is more fun lol. What fish are active, or school nicely or have a heap of character? I like angels, but realise they limit what else you can have. So if I wanted to pass on the neons and get angels, what else could I have in there... Or any other ideas? Yeah, its easter sunday and I am bored haha
mitzy
keyholes are peaceful, i got one thats just about eating out of my hand though not sure if they can go with neons.
shadowfax
we put some tiger barbs in the 4ft & they look neat, school alot & are always on the go. we had 12 but the big ones picked off the little ones & theres only 5 left
imsweet
I have Pearl Gourami x8 and theyre real characters. They mostly school together, have a heirachy, show off, Eat from my fingers when it comes to freeze dried worms. Just great to watch overall. But do check with someone about the rams. I think i have read somewhere that they are the 'nicer' of the cichlid? Not too sure about suitable tank mates for them. Perhaps a couple of small bristlenoses? Theyre fun to watch on the glass. Rozski
Yeah the neons I would trade in for newer models if need be, so compatibility with them isnt a huge issue. My blue rams don't seem to hassle any other fish LOL at your tigerbarbs. They sound like evil wee things Going to look up keyhole cichlids... wasn't sure if they were community cichlids or not Hoping that there will be panduros available for me to buy, but wont hear until later tonight
Keri Anne
If you want to keep it small and colourful add some livebearers and some interesting tetras.
Rozski
I think my blue tux guppies *might* be going in my big tank. Want to get my little tank off my desk so I can have desk space lol I am fussy though, if I have little schooling fish I want them to school! Don't like it as much when there are lots of little fish that just mix up together. Spose if I put a big scary fish in... haha I like the keyholes. What other cichlids are good for planted comm tanks? I LOVE my blue rams, they are gorgeous. Have spawned a couple of times too, but I havent bothered to try and raise fry yet
mitzy
Kribensis are quite peaceful too unless breeding, I have kribs in my community tank.
mitzy
If you ever want to sell you blue rams let me know. lol been after some for a while now.
Rozski
haha, dads at me to get kribs. He says if I don't get any he'll buy a pair and dump them in there anyway. He had them years ago. I doubt I'll want to sell them mitzy! they are my fav fish. The female I assume is imported, and she went through 2 imported males before I got a NZ bred male. Seem to be doing well, have had them together for several months now. The nz male was small when I got him but hes now bigger than her. Our LFS had the nz rams, but they are $20 each. The ones in there at the moment are quite small too.
mitzy
LOL Nothing wrong with kribs , they interesting. I havent seen any rams in our lfs but maybe a trip up there at somestage.
ryanjury
Yeah they have a heap more of those ram's in there now I kept killing all of mine homebred or not.. Golds or blue's.. Who knows whats going on.. As for fish with character Africans have character move all your other fish out you could setup a nice little african tank with demasoni, yellow's and some peacocks it would be awesome Keyholes may work or they may scrap with your ram's they're pretty peaceful though. Kribs might be alright they're pretty nasty when spawning though and really common, otherwise you could go down the livebearer track you can get some nice swords, mollies and stuff? Rozski
You lost your homebred ones too??? that sucks. Didn't realise you'd gotten any, or was this a while ago? and lol, yeah I like africans too. But I'm afraid I like plants hence me thinking of getting more peaceful cichlids for my tank You could help me though. I want to know what the fish are in one of the display tanks at Wet Pets. One of the big tanks along the top, before you get to the goldfish. There are some silver cichlids (am pretty sure) that are always breeding. They seem to always have spawn around them. Rather fine fins too. Do you know what they are? even if you have a couple of guesses, itll be easier for me to look them up instead of trawling through galleries to find them haha Mollies and swords don't really do it for me
firefish
I think I know which ones your talking about, if we're thinking of the same ones they're Lamprologus brichardi.
ryanjury
I got 2 pairs of home bred blues and 2 pairs of homebred golds from Auckland now im left with 1f blue and 1m glod... The fish you are talking about are N Brichardi http://www.cichlid-forum.com/profiles/s ... hp?id=1601 nice fish I prefer and have N Pulcher http://www.cichlid-forum.com/profiles/s ... hp?id=2247 they have a nicer yellow base colour instead of that silver.. They are cool fish and colony spawners as you may have noticed at wetpets seeing all the different sized ones defending the babies.. If you want to look at mine feel free to come over and say hi.. Rozski
Yes! those are the ones, cheers Though they are africans, and need a high pH, so I wont be getting them. They are pretty though, for straight silver fish
Rozski
oooo can we get dwarf flag cichlids here? Small, pretty...
Ant N
I had blue rams, my favourite dwarf , but found they got either withdrawn or overly agrressive when I had cribs in there. 160lt community tank. I lost most of the rams and gave away the last two. However cardinal tetras with the blue rams are stunning , a large group will often school in a straight line from one side of the tank to the other. neons never seemed to last too long for me. Pearl gouramis are characters and look awsome ,especially when coloured up for breeding. Enjoy your research
Rozski
Yeah I love cardinals too. Just costly. Do they school nicer than neons? My neons seem to get as far away from eachother as possible
evilknieval69
Fish with character. hmmmm, KILLIES!!!!!!!!
Rozski
killies? absolutely gorgeous, yes. But character? The pair I had just 'hung out'. Didn't really swim around much. The ones I have seen in stores have been similar. And yes, very fully planted tank they were in lol. Plus they are so small. Oh, been wanting to ask for a while, how large do king killies get? DutchKiwiCowboy2
What do you think about Harlequins, I got 5 recently and they are great. I know they'll go great with what you've already got. My ones show up with bright orange neon edges after the sun has set. (probably be an effect from my light though). I wish I could put more in my tank but I'm already pushing the stocking limits. 8)
Rozski
I do like the swift rasboras. The orange streak is brighter in them. Do yours like to school or are they happy wherever?
Naz_Nomad
Going to look up keyhole cichlids... wasn't sure if they were community cichlids or not Keyholes are great in a community set-up. Not too fussy about water parameters, peaceful and so full of character. They change colour when frightened, they have a hierachy amongst themselves which is fun to watch being set up and constantly challenged without the fighting. Drop a shrimp pellet into the water and watch them pick it up and run round the tank with all their tank mates in a convoy trying to get a nibble. On top of that, if you ever get them breeding they are excellent parents, as are most cichlids. I love Keyholes, they're my long-time favourite fish for any tank. DutchKiwiCowboy2
I only have a two foot tank so they are at the end before they can realy get going but in general they do stay reletively close to each other. If I had more I think they would school better.
