dogmatix
Hi everyone, My tank is 4'*2'*2' and has two corner overflows. I scored a "reef-surge" sump for nothing, this measures 50cmL*30cmW has room for a return pump but nothing else. And i still need to place my skimmer and fluidised sand bed filter somewhere (A second sump). Do i place it all in one big sump and drill the acryllic reef surge, which i can close later with taps ? Or run two different sumps, one of each overlow ? Your thoughts. Ben
Pies
1 sump! Half as many things can go wrong. The problem with running 2 sumps from one tank its it will be to hard to gain 'ballance'. Also if a pipe is clogged or slows down, you may get an overflow out of the other sump because twice the water is being sent down it. The only realy way to be safe is to feed (via overflow) the 2nd sump from the first sump. This way the 'cascade' effect still works, and gravity will do its thing. I would reccomend using 1 sump, with 2 partitions, 1 for equipment, the 2nd of refugium (I assume thats why you want 2?). You 'could' do 2 sumps but I think there is some danger associated with it, I personally wouldn't be willing to take the risk. YMMV. Good luck Pies
reef
why use a fluidised sand bed filter . this will cause high nitrates
dogmatix
Going to have a korallin denitrator to keep thoose down. Plus as pies said a refugium with probly some small mgroves hpeforly theese will eliminate any nitrates as i want as highly eff biological filter as possible

chimera
i think you should have 1.27 sumps
reef
two sumps, works great for me, without fludised bed filter. fludised beds are not for reef tanks'', but big skimmers are great.
