HaNs
also will reverse osmosis turn the water springwater like? Reverse Osmosis removes all impurities AFAIK. Spring water will have contaminates like minerals and other bits in it (high TDS, total disolved solids compared to RO water) You seen prices on RO filters? Taupo tap water should be fine for axies
HaNs
I wouldnt bother with a skimmer, just do more water changes. Not like you have corals Try a surface skimmer if you feel the need, will also be cheaper i think http://nz.answers.yahoo.com/question/in ... 339AAu0RlB

jolliolli
a skimmer won't work very well in freshwater due to the density of the water. Salt water is denser and produces a foam which is skimmed out, you can't obtain this very well in freshwater
RixIce
Waste of Money I would think axolotls are very hardy. Just a good biological filter would do the trick
Ianab
Protein skimmers are worth the effort in saltwater tanks where big water changes are not practical. In a freshwater tank, frequent water changes are a more practical way to keep the water clean. You can set up a continous drip system to change 50% of your tank water per day a lot cheaper and easier than a skimmer. Ian

Ira
Putting a skimmer on a freshwater tank to save you from occasional water changes would be about one of the biggests wastes of money I could think of. Except goldfish, of course.

jolliolli
the thing is a skimmer isn't going to work properly in freshwater anyway
