Cockatoo cichlid Virus??

Hi all

I'm looking to buy a pair of red or orange cockatoo dwarf chiclids.

There's a pair of cockatoos on trade me that are descended from wild parents and don't seem to have the colouring that I was hoping for.

I asked the seller whether he ever gets reds and he has replied stating that he has had bad experiences with the imported Reds. They seem to die on him after about a month. He was saying that it appears they are carrying a virus that does them in... :-?

Has anyone else had this exprience? I had my heart set on a double red but I don't want to buy fish that expire after only one month!

I'd appreciate your feedback

Karlos

The one and only time I've known him to import cockatoos they were direct from the Amazon and all looked like the wild parents shown on the auction. I know for a fact that he used to get double and triple red cockatoos from a local breeder here in Upper Hutt and there wasn't anything dodgy about them nor was there any "cockatoo cichlid virus" as I had many healthy ones from him in the past and enjoyed breeding them.

I Googled it but I can't find a single report linking any specific virus to Apistogramma cacatuoides anywhere online.

LMAO!!!

That photo is most likely the best in the fish world

  • 2 weeks later...

The fish from wellington only lasted a short while and supplier also said he to had lost them..I have had read on a maf web somewhere where a virus to affect all dwf cichlids had been id..

I now have not tried them since but did today see another threat about loosing them..

I have just stayed with the wild ones and have just a few losses in original imports and none in what breed here,, .........Phill

Well I was really keen on gettting some cockatoos but I have second thoughts about getting any at the moment. Reds or wilds...

I have to say I agree with Jury. we aren't talking about how to breed them, its about keeping them alive.

Thats my two cents

Karlos.

lol but you basically just said you had a treatment that could help these people out with the appisto's they are having trouble with and have said that you will only pass it on to whoever buys your business :(

Yes thats fine if you were getting the appisto's treating them and onselling them and they were all healthy from there..

In the end we are all hobbiests and if your willing to help people out not be cagey it will have kick back's even if its someone saying thank you and enjoying their fish or someone coming out to visit you and buy fish see what you do.

Hi

You hit the nail right on the head..Business Breeding is not like a hobby..

If other importer saw what i was treating with then they will flood the market with cheap imports..

Even now most imports are MALES only..They kull out Females..To protect there business..

I have protected the ones i do to my best and will not let 2 years of work go down the drain...Even saying this the auctions on trade me have been changed to reflect what im now selling as most have been sold..

Cheers to All Phill

Having bred fish commercially and imported I can sympathise. The number of people who come around to find out what you are doing, talk for hours and buy little is astonishing. That is why after a very short time I did not sell fom home but only to shops and wholesalers. They don't want to know how you do it, only that you have it when they want it (which can also be a challenge) We used to supply shops with oxygen weed and tubifex but trust me it was secret squirel.

Hi

Thanks for note..If it wasnt for trade me ..I think i would not have bothered becomming a Discus Specialist Breeder ..At least this way anyone can buy..And yes people do waste time but i find more just want a pretty fish..I get a real kick out of seeing fish like whiptails that only breed in the wild actually breed like an express train...

Cheers Phill
