brown alge problem

How long has the tank been running?

I find that i always get a round of brown algae on newly setup tanks.

after a week or so the tank tends to balance itself out a bit better(nutrient wise) and the brown algae soon disapears.

Try increasing the period of lighting and see what happens then.

There are quite a number of fish referred to as "algae eaters". This does not necessarily mean that if you add one of them to your tank it will eat all the algae

Different algae eaters like different algae and often none of them like whichever alage it is you have in your tank

Recommend a common bristlenose. Grow to 10cm, but take a long time, and will live in small tanks no problems.

Will sort out your algae and dont need big places to live.

Just when you're out of algae, you might need to feed him too :) Also you need a piece of driftwood, size doesn't matter, just as long as he has some wood to naw on (driftwood, not regular wood cause it rots :( )
