Adrienne
Got 2 new discus last night - thanks to discus guru & friend. and Now to show my ignorance about discus. What causes the sooty look on the fish below or is it supposed to look like this. I've seen them in the shops so suppose its normal. One more question - is it or is it not a good idea to have bristlenose ancistrus in a discus tank? If not what else could I have as an algae eater. I have 5 sterbai corys as cleanup crew but may yet get a few more
ryanjury
Don't quote me on it but I think that spotty discus are poorer quality, nothing different in the fish but I dont think the purists try and breed for spotty fish
Faran
Peppering is common for the orange strains, the less freckles the higher the grade. Usually blamed on cross breeding but I've had a fair few even with pure strains and non-peppered parents. I see is as nature, kinda like the freckles on my face. Adrienne
I just fixed my pics above, had pasted one twice. The orange one has developed the peppering over the last week mainly, really fast. Mind you he/she has grown a lot over the last few weeks too. Faran
Lemme guess, it was in a light tank with a light or no background previously and now it's in a dark background planted tank? If so it's just the discus' natural tendency to blend with surroundings.
Adrienne
thats correct

You are dead right on discus that carries the pigeon strain Faran And for pattern discus in a planted tank, you'll see them showing the stress bar more often depending on mood, surrounding, water quality...... ron
Adrienne
whats the stress bar?
