heyandrea_
My work place has an aquarium, and I noticed today that one of the fish wasn't swimming normal. It kept trying to swim down to the bottom of the tank, but kept floating to the top and then it would bob on the top of the water on its side for a few secs and then try and swim to the bottom again. It looked as though it was trying to stop itself from floating to the top of the water. It's a fantail goldfish. Is there any cure for this? Or is it too late? And does this sound like swim bladder disorder?
jim r
It could be a bacterial problem I suggest you go to the search site and google "swim bladder" and see how other people have dealt with it.
Caryl
The fancy goldfish are prone to swim bladder disease. Is it worse after feeding?
heyandrea_
I only just noticed the goldfishs' behaviour today, never noticed anything like it before. We've had the goldfish for about 4 years now and never had any probs with it!
Caryl
Was their brand of food changed? As also suggested, may be a bacterial problem.
heyandrea_
nope always had the same brand of food, the other fish in the tank is fine.. although we did have a death about a week ago, but i wasnt there to see the fish at the time, and another staff member got rid of it before i could look at it.. nothing has changed, water changes are made reguarly etc.. just looks like a case of swim bladder to me
Caryl
Did you have a sudden temp drop? That sometimes triggers it off (a cold night after several hot ones).
heyandrea_
Im unsure about a temperature change.. could be a possibility! .. strange thing is the fish seemed fine today.. so i'll keep an eye on it!
Caryl
It really sounds like swim bladder.
Caper
Have you tried the pea treatment? No food for 3 days, then peas for 3 days...just a suggestion Caper
heyandrea_
He seems to be back to his normal self again.. very strange.. but I would've done the pea treatment thing
Caryl
It is quite possible he merely ate a bit more than he should, or a bigger piece than normal and it had trouble getting through the digestive system.
Caper
Glad he is back to normal Caper

Rufus
....... pea treatment..... No food for 3 days, then peas for 3 days. Does that really work ..... or are you having us on? :-?
Caper
No, seriously. Sorry but I can't think off hand who told me, someone who used it on here and since then have seen it on other places. To be honest, don't exactly remember if I was told about it for swimm bladder or constipation :-? But I do know it is good to treat them with peas for constipation (thought I did this edit last night...duh!) But my goldies get peas once a week and if I think there swimming off so to speak they get the treatment but if I recall only had to do that once quite awhile ago. Caryl
Peas work well for constipated fish. The hardest part is getting the fish to actually eat it
