kiwiplymouth
I have some nice plump zebra danios and tiger barbs at the moment. I only have 1 spawning tank and have placed 3 female danios and 2 female barbs in it. I plan to introduce the danio and barb males at the same time in 3-4 days. I'm hoping that both species will spawn at a similar time and then i can remove all the adult leaving only the eggs. Does any foresee any problems with this idea? Cheers and Merry Xmas P.S. Does anyone know if zebra danios and long finned leopard danios cross breed?
Casper
P.S. Does anyone know if zebra danios and long finned leopard danios cross breed? i think they do, but from what i remember the offspring will be infertile
coelacanth
zebra and leopard danios are basically the same fish, and yes they will hybridise and yes the offspring are fertile (they tend to look similar to zebras). The origins of the leopard danio are obscure: they were originally described from specimens with no locality data -- there are suggestions that they came from Thailand or Cambodia, or that they are actually a mutation of the zebra danio bred in Europe. DNA tests tend to support the latter, but its really all up in the air. With regards to breeding the tiger barbs and danios in the same tank at the same time, might as well give it a go and see how it works. Personally though I'd just breed one of them, then when the breeding tank is freed up again breed the other.

DutchKiwiCowboy2
I recently tried to breed Neons and tiger barbs at the same time, Unfortunately I killed the Neon fry accidently when I removed the cover too early and the Barb fry never hatched. See my piece on Simultanious Breeding for more.
kiwiplymouth
I now have around 200 5 day old danio fry. no sign of any barb fry tho.
DutchKiwiCowboy2
The first fish I bred were tigers and they seemed to have taken a lot longer to hatch than other barbs types. I had already given up and when I went to clean the tank three weeks after that I discovered fry.
