White Spot on my Clown Loaches Plz Help!

Hi guys...

I bought a couple of Clown Loaches for my tank from a certain fish shop in Auckland. When I went back there yesterday to buy another fish I was told that the Clown Loach tank my Loaches came from now all have White Spot! When I got home I checked my Clowns closely, and surely it looks like they also have White Spot  :(

A couple of questions - Will they infect my other fish? They seem to hide behind the filter most of the day.

And secondly - please help me - what is the best way to get rid of it? Mine's quite a new tank and don't want this to be the way to start! Any help will be muchly appreciated....

Cheers, Melissa

Problem is this shop has a policy - once the fish leave the store they are yours. I doubt they will take them back - plus I would really like to try to cure them if at all possible. You reckon just get some White Spot treatment? I will increase the temp also to around 30C - Just need to find out if that will affect my Gourami, Betta, Congo Tetra or Bristlenose before I do that... :-?

If anyone has any idea please let me know - need to know that my other fish won't die if I increase the temperature to get rid of the pet shop's white spot!!!

Whitespot is a very hard thing to deal with with regards to returning fish etc and CL's in particular are known be very prone to such things. Most stores do have a policy with regards to health but not many will cover whitespot because its so easy to bring on.

In saying that though if the tank was already infected they may give you free treatments/ refunds if they pass on but there isnt much point in taking them back, either way the w/spots cycle has started in your tank.

Best of luck with your treatment

i got rid of whitespot by increasing temp to 29 & dosing every second day & doing a water change before dosing for 2 weeks with white spot cure. it as not come back since, that was approx 4 -6 months ago. I also bought fish that had the whitespot from my LFS, so they (as great as they are) gave me the white spot cure for free.

Thanks for all the help guys - rung them up and they said I could take them back and get new ones... However after some of your advice I'm thinking it would be a better idea to get the cure from them for free! I have increased the temp to 29C today - will do it to 30C tonight. Will that affect my Beta, Gourami, Congo Tetra or Bristlenose though?

Only one way to learn right?

Best of luck with your fish.....we all know the joys of sick fish and how annoying it can be. I'm at the point of wanting to shout with mine.

I've found taking deep breaths and not taking it to heart helps..... I do feel for you....

Sounds like your on track so everything will soon settle and you can sit back and enjoy your fish.

Tip for now on....have a spare tank or even a container you can put any new fish and PLANTS in, that way you can watch them in there for a while first and not get "bugs" in your nice tank....

I've learnt the hard way.... lost 8 fish and heaps of fry..... because I got a bug from putting things stright in tank..... and I'm still trying to get things right ..... weeks later! :x

If you quarantined clown loaches im sure you would give them white spot when first introducing them and then again when you stuck them in the main tank so it may well be counter productive..

In saying that qtine tanks are vital so you dont introduce other not so easy to cure problems and problems that aren't caused by stress internal parasites etc.

Lesson of the day is Quarantine Tank I think! Will see if I can go and buy something this weekend. Good news though! Only one of the Loaches seem to have White Spot and after treating the tank and leaving the lights off as well as increasing the temperature all the fish seem happier which is great! Phew!

Thanks for everyone's help, I really appreciate it!

QT tanks and whitespot are a complete waste of time. Whitespot is in all tanks anyways, (usually dormant), Every time I have added clowns to a tank, they have instantly come down with whitespot, due to moving stress, bags, etc. Bump the temp up to 28-30, most of your fish will be fine, increase the airration, and watch those tetras. Don't take the clowns out of the tank, they will get whitespot as soon as they are reintroduced

Awesome thanks Markoshark. Temp is up to about 29C now and all the fishies seem happy. Won't be moving those Loaches again EVER! Never realised they were so suceptible to diseases but am going to try my best to get them to full health so that they can rule this tank forever haha!

I'm thinking I definately will use QT's for other new fish going into this tank though, however won't be introducing any new fish for a while now... don't want those Loaches to start stressing again!

QT might not always work for whitespot but what if those loaches had camallanus or some other type of internal nastie they are prone to? Once youve lost fish due to introducing others you get pretty cautious

Good to hear theyre on the mend, great work!
