alanmin4304 Posted December 5, 2007 Report Share Posted December 5, 2007 When feeling romantic the males develop pimple-like lumps on the gill plates and the leeding edge of the pectoral fins and they use these to stimulate the females (a bit like roses and chocs) The gill plates are the covers over the gills and the pectoral fins are the ones just below. Caryl Posted January 12, 2008 Report Share Posted January 12, 2008 Hard to tell on the chubby fish but comets are easy. Look down on them from above. Males are dead straight from nose to tail. Females tend to bulge slightly to one side so the tail looks like ot is a little offset. In breeding season the males will often get white spots just behind the gill plates.
