MrEd
I talked to the head guy at my LFS about the premature death of my Rams (1 - 1.5 years). He said he has had numerous complaints about the same thing with the Rams loosing their colour (amazingly good) and going washed out then dying some as early as 1 year. The Singaporean fish breeders were using substances to force colour into their fish to make them more appealing and sell better, and I must say mine were stunning. However one side effect of the induced colour is premature death! The LFS Wet Pets have acted responsably and no longer buy from the overseas breeder and instead use local breeders. .... good on yah Wet Pets! alanmin4304
I suspect that could be one reason why people are having so much trouble with guppies.
Bananalobster
Do you think that has something to do with dwarf gouramis being quite susceptible to diseases? (excuse the spelling!).
tHEcONCH
Yep, I'm afraid most of the rams imported in the last couple of years are dodgy - a lot die within a year after failing to grow.

Rozski
Hmmm, when did they start not buying imported ones? Coz I have heard from more than one person who bought rams (I guess from there) that have had the same problem of dying off. I got a pair, and the female is still going strong. The male was thin when I got him (shouldnt have bought him really) and he just got thinner and died eventually. Bought a gorgeous male from the other LFS (big, colourful, the works) and he spawned within a couple of days with my girl, before promptly rolling over and dying within a week  No more unless locally bred thanks! tHEcONCH
The problem is that they cost A LOT in terms of time and money to raise properly - most people simply won't pay what it actually costs, let alone a retail margin on top - that's why a lot of people just don't bother raising the fry. Rozski
 wish he'd died happy at a ripe ole age tho! Got fry to almost free swimming (in their own tank). Dropped a ball of java moss into the tank for them to hide in, and they disappeared, never to be seen again haha Rams!
shadowfax
they have some really tiny ones in there at the mo, but i wouldn't pay $20 when they are so small
Fishkeepa
I have exactly the same problem with rams they lasts about 3 months then went belly up Maybe should look out for some nice homebred ones
MrEd
I think I paid $17.00 each for mine but would really prefer paying more and having them live 3 to 4 times as long! After buying 6 of them and only having one left I've given up on them. Did get one pair to spawn though. The remaining one, getting to geriatric age of one year, is pale washed out and getting thinner yet eats well. Thought they must of had TB or NTD but seems not! Sounds like they have just recieved the new local bred Rams last week Rozski. Shadowfax might have a better idea ..... missed seeing you there this time Shadow! Bilbo
they have some really tiny ones in there at the mo, but i wouldn't pay $20 when they are so small They are a bit small but they are from local breeder and have been raised on good food and no colour additives. They should be fine.
alanmin4304
That is what you want. Get a few and breed them.
