Jalil30
Can I use either of these products prophylactically on my feeder fish. Or will the fish being exposed to it affect the Fish they are being fed to. I am hoping to avoid anything the feeders could be introducing to my tanks. BK
I would say that formulin would be a better option.
Jalil30
Ok thanks.. I just gooogled formulin.. It looks like a good option.. I'm gonna call my LFS and see if they carry it.
tHEcONCH
I would use none of the above - Melafix and Furan are poisionous at the best of times and should only be used as a last resort, and Formalin won't kill internal parasites anyway. BK
I think what he wants is along the line of a disinfectant wash. None will treat internals and I doubt that any one would want to treat for 1 week or 2 on feeders. I use a Formuline salt mix to clean my net's between tanks act this is quick, cheap and effective. alanmin4304
formaldehyde is formalin solution and is available from your vet. Reasonably cheap last time I bought it. It is used to control parasites and viruses. Anything which kills bacteria, viruses or parasites is going to be toxic and should be treated with the respect it deserves. tHEcONCH
Have you considered buying better quality feeder fish?
BK
What kind of feeder are you using, a small tank (300X200X200) with guppies should be suitable.
Jalil30
I have been using goldfish/Minnows... Guppies I have been seeing around seem too expensive to use and feeders.. They cost more than my neons.
tHEcONCH
Guppies are also very easy to breed - you could grow your own, perhaps.
Jalil30
Ive never tried breeding anything... Although my convicts didn't need any effort. Can I get help for that int the breeding forum?
tHEcONCH
Tank, water, java moss, and guppies - stir once and leave (but yes, google guppy breeding and you will find loads of info).
Jalil30
Can they be kept in my community tank until pregnant do you know?
tHEcONCH
Yep, and they'll breed there too - but the babies will be eaten. They are almost permanently pregnant, so if you are going to breed them you'll need a seperate tank.
alanmin4304
You could use your convicts as feeders---they breed like mad and it is about all they are good for.
